I put in a new CD player and my rear speakers don’t work right. What speakers come in 6 x 9 that sound good for a 99 Cavalier Z24?
Check your speakers.
To my knowledge, J bodies had a few different sound systems.
1 was the stock stereo. Head unit & speakers.
Another, was one step up from that, which offered an auxiliary amplifier, which is mounted in the trunk, on the driver’s side.
And the last, was the Monsoon stereo.
If you have anything other than the base stereo, you’ll need to purchase speaker wire harnesses, OR splice into the rear speaker wires BEFORE the amp.
On the amplified systems, the rear 6x9 is a 2-way speaker, one pair of wires only seem to produce high fequencies, the other produces low frequencies.
I’ve played around a bit with these wires, and couldn’t hook up a normal, 2 terminal 6x9 to them with satisfactory sound quality.
Find out what you have, and we’ll go from there
How do I find out which kind I have?
define “don’t work right”
Get fuzzy and crackly, sometimes dont work at all. Humming noises made sometimes.
Open trunk.
Remove Driver’s side trunk panel near trunk hinge.
Look for metal box approximately the size of an alarm clock.
OR
Remove rear deck.
Remove plastic ring & 6x9 as one piece.
Count wires going into 6x9.
2 wires = stock base stereo.
4 wires = amplified stock stereo.
And it sounds like your speakers are possibly blown.

Oh and as far as what sound good in YOUR car, is up to your musical taste, and budget.
If anything, I’d ask around on http://www.j-body.org
If anyone will know, they will.
But aside from a suggestion here and there, you’ll get the same response.
Any aftermarket 6x9 you buy, will improve the sound over the factory 6x9. The question, is how much of an improvement do you want?
Is this car going to compete in Sound Quality competitions, or is it just to boost your sound?
How much are you willing to spend on a pair of speakers?
Ask yourself these questions.
Stop on into Circuit City in Cheektowaga and Jay(addictedtoboost) or I can take a peek, it’s definatly a 6x9" though.
Z24challange:if your going for sound quality you wont use rear speakers…youll want a little thump in the trunk w/ some rockin highs and mids up front. rear speakers are the worst thing for “quality sound” its like listening to someone talk to you from behind.
I agree completely…
Without a solid low end, your sound will never cover as many possible frequencies.
However, you wouldn’t want your sub in the trunk, reproducing sounds above 170Hz or so…
I have 2 1200 watt 10" subs with a 1200 watt amp that I will be putting in the trunk friday. What should I do with my rear speakers to make it sound good with my subs? I’m pretty sure the car I had them in had rear speakers and it sounded fine. Should I replace them or should I take them out because you guys said they wont sound good with subwoofers.
