Google Maps on iPod Touch...WOW!

Anyone have a jailbroken iPod Touch with this? I just upgraded mine last night to 1.1.3 with the wiggly icons and bookmarks on the home screen.

I am sitting at work with this thing connected to my works WiFi and it can point me out on the map… amazing!

really? anytime I’ve used the locate function on mine, it put a tac mark out in the middle of lake erie lol

gps is a hell of a technology. is it using gps or wifi?

no, it’s not real GPS… it triangulates the signal (over edge for the iphone, wifi for the phone and ipod)

yea this thing was dead on. i am confused as hell how it works. our internet connection goes out of Syracuse so I dunno. Haha.

well i know i can “ping” phones… errr. cell phone companies can find out where you are in seconds. e911 for example

yea cell phones use GPS. this is my iPod Touch which has no GPS or EDGE built into it. Just WiFi

my mogul has gps with my location for turn by turn directions to most anywhere. it shows where you are on the road and tells you when youre turn is coming up.

Pretty intresting info on it from the iPodTouchFans Forums:

The company (i forget what its called) that provided the locate me feature used special vans to drive around and store the GPS coordinates of wireless access points. Yes… they drove up and down every street in your city logging any access point they could find. Your iPod then picks up the SSIDs, and sends it to their servers, which in turn figure out where you are.

In order to keep the system up to date, the system will also log new SSIDs and store them based on the coordinates of the ones it already knows. Any that are in the database, but arent being picked up anymore are deleted.

Seems like alot of overhead when you could just stick a GPS receiver in it, however the biggest benefit is it works well in urban centers and indoors where GPS signals are minimal or non-existent.

these phones amaze me. that sucks for the driving around lol. ive got a gps receiver in my telly. crazy technology…

there was a video I saw on modmyifone.com from a company working on a plug in GPS unit for the iphones/ipod touch (plugs into the charging port).

then from there, it’s compatible with google maps

That would be sweet. I hope they eventually come out with more addons for that port. I have no purpose to have an iPhone but I would love to expand the power of the iPod

i have a jailbroken / unlocked iphone running 1.1.4 now.
Gotta love the goog maps! Very nice stuff. Just hope they add a GPS feature that’s true GPS sometime.

not really related to the GPS thing, but a team is in the process of porting linux to the iphone/ipod

can’t wait… long as the phone function still works

wait…how do you upgrade the firmware on a jailbroken one? i have 1.1.1

i thought you had to to have a jailbroken one with apps and all. my maps do not do locate. someone wanna help out?

edit: do i just update the firmware through itunes? i thought that wiped everything off.

yea im not to really worried about that. the terminal app and bsd subsystem provides all the framework I need.

with a 1.1.1 go to jailbreakme.com on your web browser. you will have it jailbroken. you can upgrade it to 1.1.2 using an app and them 1.1.3 off the phone.

What app do I use

Google is your friend:

well, i was looking around for a way to do it without wiping everything out. but i had to start all over. but it is nice to start fresh. i had a crapload of apps and stuff on there i didnt want. now…the only thing i cant do is get customize to work for 1.1.4

i have read that it is impossible. anyone?
