Hey guys,
I’m thinking of getting my sons into some go kart racing when they’re 9ish and work up the food chain from there. The logic is that they’ll be better drivers and, with an outlet at the track, less likely to be stupid on the street.
Variable has already sworn to program any kid he may have to race at an early age! Check out this vid!
I can honestly say that my buddy matt, who grew up around racing. While not this intesively is one of the best drivers I know. I think he should actually be out at namao this week end. Driving eather his freshly imported 300zx or the flatblack civic hatch. He would likley be one of the few people that actaully had the chance to experiance this kind of thing in the edmonton area. His dad still helps run events for the NASCC and they build racecars out at his place in fort sask. Including a 750whp tubeframe fiero… which is likley the fastest touring car in canada. That thing is INSANE.
 You bet! But I’ve got a pretty good idea that they’ll be all over it.
Their first taste of racing has been in a sailboat at the lake the last couple of summers. Enthusiasm was high and the kids stayed focussed for the entire 2 hr race last weekend.
Good point though. If they’re not into it, it’ll be a waste of time and money.
If you looking to get your kid behind the wheel of a car and start racing. Me and a couple buddies were looking at running some carts out at statotech before the year is over. If there is room I am sure you could bring him out and share a kart between the two of you. I just have to talk to my buddy mark about it. If you get really interested in it and are willing to spend a bit of money (around 10 grand) you and your son could share a kart because there is a series of races in the middel of the week and another series that runs on the week ends. Shifter karts get going to about 140km/h at statotech from my understanding. I will get some more details about when we are going to do it and PM you.It will likley be a couple hundred bucks or so.
Thanks! I’ll look forward to the info. My oldest boy is only 9 and the only driving experience he’s got is on Grandpa’s quad at the acreage. (He hit a fence!) He’ll need to start on something that won’t go 140!
I actually took a peek at Stratotech’s web site and it looks like there could be a really good fit.
Well, maybe a bunch of us south side guys should pick a day and go run at whitemud amusement park. Everyone else buys the winner a free next race ? Its a little pricy but we could do like 4 races for around $20. with 5 guys or so that could be a lot of fun. I will bring my camera gear and we can do it up. 8)
That’d work well for starting kids. Unless they’ve stepped up the performance since last time I was there (15 yrs?) they’re not that challenging.
Are the West Ed Mall carts still going? They’re a lot more fun than the Whitemud ones and might be a better fit for guys who want to get a taste for racing without risking their cars…
I’d personally love to get some seat time in one of the fast carts you mentioned earlier! My kids just have a bit of learning to do before I’d let them near something that fast.
Whitemud actuallly has some pretty quick cars now. You need a drivers licence to drive the quickest ones. I actually had a pretty good battel with a guy that drives a gold 240 with NECC and JIC decals earlier this year. Sadly my fat ass makes me a little slow in the karts, driver wieght makes such a differance in those things. The karts from fast tracks in west ed are actually in storeage at stratotech now that its closed down. They were actually trying to sell them. They wanted to much money.
