GTI MKVI APR Stage 1 Question

Hi all,

I have an GTI MKVI with an APR stage 1. I recently purchased an catback and intake. If I install, can I still run on the standard Stage 1 tune, or do I need to upgrade to the APR stage 1 with Intake tune? I realize I may not get the full performance if I don’t upgrade, but I just want to make sure I won’t be getting fault codes or anything.

Eventually I’ll get a downpipe for Stage 2, but at the moment just excited to install the parts I have.

Thanks for your feedback in advance.

Dan

You should be fine with just the stage 1 tune, there won’t be any negative side effects. I ran an APR intake on no tune for quite a long time.

You’re fine, cat back does nothing but sound. Intake you could map but without a down pipe you’re not gaining much anyways.

Downpipe is the best thing you can replace on these cars.

I have one, intake and cat back is fine no tune. Even downpipe is ok. I currently have intake, downpipe, and stage 1. Will go stage 2 soon. The computers adapt well in these.

Yes/no, it adds a lot of torque and will start to really push the limits of the stock clutch.

X…

True. Yes, it will take out the stock clutch pretty quick. Just ask Gennaro, ha. I guess I should have clarified. From a cost v. perf persective… DP and tune over anything else. Intake and exhaust would be last on my list.

Agreed.

I did the Unitronic tune on my CC and nothing else and it seems perfect. They seem to keep the boost down in the lower RPM to keep the torque not crazy high. My clutch on that car is fine, and I’ve had the tune for about 20K miles (55k miles total on the car) and it seems to pull pretty nice. The car fights for traction under 30mph, which is about enough to make the car entertaining.
