headed out this morning on a quick assignment for my wife (who luckily was not in the car being 8 months pregnant and all). arrived at an intersection near my house where there is a 2 way stop at a reasonably busy truck route. i was crossing to the other side so i had to wait a while for traffic to clear. finally a guy was going to turn left and wanted me out of the way since it is a tight turn.
he gives me the wave to go ahead in front of him, there were about 3 or 4 cars backed up behind him so i figured it was safe to go. just about get to the other side of the intersection when out of the corner of my eye i see a streak of black, a big bang and then i’m rolling…and rolling…and stop.
and the other guy
so apparently the guy in the jetta came upon the backed up traffic and decided to pass on the shoulder…some said 4 cars, others 5 but it was at least 3 from my recollection. i never even saw him coming and initially he was pretty pissed off at me for driving through the intersection. i just reminded him it is illegal to pass on the shoulder, particularly multiple cars.
i was absolutely amazed that i rolled over at all let alone twice since i was moving relatively slow and he couldn’t have been going too wildly fast. just happened to hit me directly on the passenger side front wheel and i guess that is enough to launch a grand cherokee. he had surprisingly little damage for the impact and resulting damage to my car. all of his airbags went off, not a single one of mine did.
now i just wait to see what kind of offer the insurance company is going to come up with. unfortunately i just ordered new tires to the tune of $800 last night. i’ll probably get another GC but it’ll be my luck that it has different wheels on it.
Wow…glad you are ok…and even more glad your wife was at home (WHERE SHE BELONGS!)…sorry I had to make a joke since it worked out the best way possible.
Woah, glad you are ok! Hopefully the insurance company takes care of you. I’ve been dealing with Geico for a few weeks and they have been terrible. Has any liability been determined yet?
Glad you’re ok! At first I thought it was like a two lane(per side) road and the guy turning right waved you on but the guy who hit you was in the left lane.
Glad you’re OK. Know you’ve learned your lesson but NEVER trust other people to direct you. They prob have enough trouble driving one car let alone two. Take the insurance money and buy a Viper.
the police ticketed the other guy and I got nothing…so at least in their eyes he was at fault…the insurance companies seem to always come up with their own fault determinations that don’t always make much sense it seems.

Yes I’m usually pretty cautious about others directions, but he was at a full stop with at least 3 cars stopped behind him…I just didn’t look far enough back I guess and never would have guessed someone would pass so many on the shoulder.
the real weird thing is that just yesterday I was at a light in the left lane and an approaching car wanted to turn into a plaza in front of me. I try to never let people do that because I’m worried they can’t see what’s going on in the right lane. Unfortunately the guy ahead of me moved forward fast and she slipped through and was almost immediately hit by a car coming up the right lane. The guy literally stopped inches from her side.

well got the appraisal and settlement offer today. $22k in damage with an ambiguous statement about substantial unknown costs to repair potential structural damage thus leading to a determination of a total loss. they have offered a settlement of $28,500…which for a otherwise excellent condition 72k mile SUV didn’t seem insulting.
i’m hoping to get another GC, maybe 2014, with a lot less miles. i’ll probably have to spend a few thousand to get the features i had in this one. it was a fully loaded laredo which made it more like a limited in 2013 and in 2014 you can’t even get most of the same options in a laredo if you wanted to. it also seems like most have 20" wheels, so i’ll have to return those new tires i guess or maybe buy a set of winter wheels.
