Hacked air-box...gas consumption gone to sh*t!

Well, last week I decided to take a look at my airbox to see if I could modify it in any way, and before I knew it, I had the whole silencer box out and the pipes to it capped off.

I filled up just after that and am now at a 1/2 tank and only drove 180k’s! Normally I’m sitting at about 300k’s after a 1/2 tank.

Is it that the MAF sensor is picking up more air flow and dumping in more fuel? The thing is though, the car doesn’t really run and different, other than being slightly louder in the upper RPM’s.

Any idea’s on what’s happening here?

i have a hugely hacked airbox (no bottom, just the part that holds the filter) and i get about 600k per tank on my sohc.

That or you enjoyed the sound at high rpm so much you’ve been driving it a little more … spirited.

Seriously though I can’t see how what you describe could affect your MPG. Pix would be helpful …

yea i did the same thing initially, chopped the bottom off, went for a drive and it sounded so much better i couldnt help it and drove the snot out of it. I grew out of it in a tank or two.

ya I have the same thing done to mine and I flogged it a couple times you would be surprised at how much gas you can use by just a few short drives at higher rpm.

My airbox is chopped below the filter, I rev hard most of the time, and I still get about +500km on every tank.

180 km’s for 1/2 tank sounds about right I have never gotten more then 380 to 400 km’s to a full tank with my car. Once you start doing modifications don’t expect to keep getting good gas mileage it doesn’t work that way. The more mod’s the more gas you will burn.

the hacked airbox is the only mod he has judging by his sig, and i have hacked airbox and catback, and i get 550-600 km a tank

It all depends on how you drive.

There is a big difference between 100, 120, and 140

I’ve done a few informal tests since I drive back and forth to london a lot.
