Steeles W. is Ontario’s worst road

TORONTO – A heavily travelled east-west route dividing Toronto and York Region has been named the worst road in Ontario for 2005.

Steeles Avenue West won the dubious distinction Tuesday after a poll conducted by the Municipal Roads Coalition.

Voters in the online poll described the road on the northern edge of Toronto as an “extremely unsafe roadway” with “horrendous potholes which cars weave to avoid, that in turn cause potential collisions.”

No. 2 on the list is Carling Avenue in Ottawa, followed by Albert Street in the Township of Norwich.

Of the Ottawa street, one voter wrote, “So bumpy, that during our pregnancy we were advised not to travel along this stretch of Carling Avenue as it may induce labour.”

Rob Bradford of the Ontario Road Builders’ Association, part of the roads coalition, said many of the roads on the list are repeat offenders.

Albert Street topped the list last year, while Steeles won in 2003.

“Albert Street, nothing has happened, and the people voted very strongly again,” Bradford said. “They want some action on it.”

The number of voters in the poll was down significantly, from almost 13,000 in 2004 to nearly 5,000 this year.

Bradford said he believes it’s because drivers are frustrated.

“Take Steeles, they saw it up there the first two years. … They don’t see anything in the near future happening to that road.”

I wholeheartedly concur. It is an utter POS and is the main thing I fear about getting coilovers, seeing as though I drive on it very often.

people should drive thorugh hamilton.

i remember on burlington street there were potholes so big you could crouch down in them and the passing cars wouldnt even hit you because you would be so far down.

thats a fukkin pothole.

same is true for Garth street and mohawk.

hamilton is total ass.

Montreal is the worst though.

Rue Sherbrooke… holy crap

dont drive in montreal with squeaky coilovers

Toronto has the worst roads I have ever driven on anywhere in North America. You don’t notice it as much unless your car is lowered. Especially the 401 sometimes there are sections where there is like a mini speedbump on the road and when you are doing like 120 or over it feels like your front end got riped right off. I asked a construction worker once about those little speed bumps on the highways (especially around the 401/409 area) and he said they are caused by changing weather conditions and the asphalt expends causing it to rise.
Anyway the point is our roads in Toronto are terrible, no wonder people drive so many suv’s if I didn’t have my 240sx I would probably own a Pathfinder or an Xtera then I wouldn’t have to keep slowing down so I can get over a bump and keep risking getting rear ended. Something has to be done about our roads here.

oh man i hear you, on my old car the pass. front spring broke in 3 places from constant hamilton driving :x
