well im looking into schools and UTI is one of my choices right now… i was looking into either hot rod u, or the super street u, anyone have any input or know anyone that has gone though these programs? any advice would help!
UTI was one of my options back in '97
i wasnt impressed by their photoshoped images of the school
i wasnt impressed by the lies they were telling me on the phone
i wasnt impressed by their attemps to convince me to attend their school which were insulting my common sense
i wasnt impressed by their high pressure sales tactics
in the end, i had to threaten them to get me to stop calling my house
is UTI the one in connecticut?
there are a bunch of them. from what i’ve gathered, it’s really only worth it if you’re trying to get into a STEP program. daN on the board went to UTI in houston, then BMW step, and is now a tech at a bmw dealership
Signed up with that Sally Struthers info-mercial over the phone instead, it was sweet i sent my $99.99 and got a diploma in the mail-sweet. I am now qualified to repair refrigerators and some AC units. Hit me up.
UTI is flying me and two other teachers out to California in two weeks. They picked up the bill for everything. I’ll let you know how it looks when I get back.
Have you checked out OTC?
i graduated from UTI, yeah i learned alot but it was still prolly the biggest waste of my time and money i’ve had. and now i’m going to be in college for about 5 years because i have to go back and take classes at a CC in order to get into the program i want to. fuckin’ aye.
oh and after actually reading your whole thread, just don’t go. if your going just because of hotrod, its a waste. and the “super street” program doesn’t actually exist, they just tell you that. the hot rod program is a complete waste of time, you don’t actually do any of the things they tell you.
-the first three weeks, you rebuild a small block chevy 350 (okay thats kinda fun but its boring, you have to move at the same speed as the entire class, and theres a ton of retards at uti)
-the second three weeks you put the SBC into a t-bucket kit car and run it on the dyno stock (once again kinda fun but you can’t really do anything else, you sit around alot) then you put some nitrous and a cam in it and maybe if your lucky some decent heads and put it on the dyno and see what it does again (a little more fun but now it gets repetitive and everyone is bored, even the retards)
-the third three weeks is the “street legal” class where you learn about bolts ons. they probably told you you can do whatever you want. well you can’t. the cars are pre-modified and you just run them on the dyno. at the most a couple of the cars you put CAI and cat back exhausts on you basically sit around everyday waiting for the dyno, then use it, then sit around waiting for the day to end, you basically want to kill yourself.
and hot rod is a prerequisite to graduate, not an option.
also your rep might have told you you can work on your car in the shop everyday after school and do whatever you want to it (mine did) well thats complete BS. you can only work on your car 1 or 2 saturdays a month at 8 in the morning. and you have to fill out a ton of paperwork. oh and also the work you can do is severely limited, basically you can only do fluid changes, brakes, minor suspensions and tire changes. anything beyond that they go “wellllll, you might run into a snag and have to leave the car at the school and we can’t have that…”
did i meantion the retards? honestly i would have liked UTI alot better but its mostly rednecks and ricers. i would want to kill myself after listening to some of the stuff that comes out these kids mouths. prepare to listen to a year and a couple months worth of bullshit. at first it was entertaining, but it got old in about my second class.

Urinary Tract Infection FTW.
Sorry had to do it.

goddammit. I was so going to post that.
oh also the uninary tract infection jokes get old real fast. prepare for alot
A buddy of mine went to the one in Texas for oh about 2 weeks realized how much bullshit it was and came back because of the weak teaching and lack of knowledge they were offering.
I had a buddy do this also, he is working at a wheel chair vehicle modification place. Yea 20k so you can but lift gates on vans, thats soo worth it.
ok, looks like i am sticking with the field of engineering, this was an option that i was looking at but, i am glad i asked you guys what you thought about it! Thank you all for your advice.
Sounds like the automotive version of ITT Tech.
i had a bad incounter with the rep from uti. basically he called me told me if i didnt go to his school id never make anything of myself and shit like that. so i wouldnt recomend it to anyone.
I went to UTI. That school is all about what you put into it. When I graduated I had all 8 ASE’s and got a really good job at a Toyota dealer that i’m still at and made over 50k my first year. If you’re a retard like 95% of the people that go to that school and just fuck around and don’t take it seriously, get no ASE’s and plan on working at Pep Boys then yes its a waste of time. Any of the STEP programs or Ford/Toyota programs are great. If you go there and don’t plan on going into any of the other programs then just forget it. And yes the hotrod program/street legal classes are bullshit. They’re fun but you learn little to nothing about modifying cars. I’m glad I went there because I was going to work at an Audi dealer but decided to go to school for Toyota and don’t regret it at all.

it wasn’t so much that… i was looking into the programing and tuning of cars with computers and the rep calls my house non stop so i was wondering if it was something worth while to check out. what he said seemed to good to be true… so i figured i would ask and i am very glad i did. but i got my acceptance letter to RIT today so engineering it is!
You’d be better of buying books on tuning from Amazon.com and learning yourself then going to UTI.
If you really want to go to “school” for tuning cars, look up EFI Academy (I think that’s the name of it?). It ain’t cheap either.
