Automotive Service at Alfred State

Does anyone have any experience with either the school/ department or with the graduates from here? I am really intrested in going there next semester/year and leaving UB. Its just not right for me here.

my one one friend dan goes there … he likes it alot

i might have to join you there next year as well

Awesome, so Im not the only one. Im kinda wondering though, how much of a job market there is out there, even for a certified tech like these guys… Well, well see. Im even considering starting next semester if its allowed.

You should check out uti, universal technical institute.
They offer specific manufactuer programs after completion of basic courses. You could get into training for BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Jaguar, VW, Audi, International. This way you’re pretty much guaranteed a job.

I’m headed to NJ for BMW step training in November.

not to sound like a jerk but If you are going to UB then Im guessing you can do better for yourself then being a automotive tech. You can make more money with any BS degree. UB is a piece of shit school. No doubt. I hate that place. They take suck the interest and enjoyment right out of learning. The point is get a degree first. Go to Buff State… whatever… but finish. You can play with cars much more when you are making serious cash.

you get what you put in, if you party alot you will be a piece of shit tech…if you study and take it serisouly you will gain from it.

In my experience with alfred techs they are usually pretty dumb because they did not take it seriously

i went to alfred for the 2 years. Big party school. Thats all there is to do out there…literally. there is nothing for miles. The program was pretty decent, but could’ve been better in my opinion. I learned quite a bit, but I feel i learned more working in an actual garage than i did there. Don is right though, if you dont take it seriously, your gonna end up a fat, alcholoic, drugged out looser…like so many people i met up there. Turned me into a heavy drinker while i was there, but i’ve since recovered and am now back at school (buff state) cause i dont wanna work on cars the rest of my life.

So when you hear “Alfred” from one of these guys, does that almost take them a notch down in your book? I take school seriously, but I struggled severely this semester due to serious depression… I think thats better now, but my grades sure as hell arent going to keep me in UB. Everyone, thanks for the input so far. Id like to see what other people have to say on the topic too.

Alfred has an open house this saturday. If your realy interested just go down and check it out.

I spent my two years there. People say Alfred is a party school, it deffentily can be. It will be what you make it to be, if you like to party you will have a blast, if you take learning serious then you will gain alot from the program. My old man has been the Senior Autobody Instructor for the last 7 years, I have herd of kids making it big and kids falling on their face. It is a good program if you take it seriously. Companys have been known to come from all over the country to hire graduates.

Awesome! Yeah, I am actually planning on heading down this saturday to check it out. I dont even know what program, though… Theres Automtive Service (leaning towards this), Ato body Repair (intresting), Heavy Equiptment (nah), and Motorsports Technology (Would Be awesome! but not too many applications in real world imho).

num482, i suppose then i had your old man for a teacher…great guy  always had lots of stories to tell. All the auto teachers up there are pretty cool…and they’re all real characters too, which makes the day interesting. I had fun…maybe alittle too much fun, but i know of a bunch of guys that left there and are doing quite well for themselves in the automotive world right now. One of em is working for NASCAR after he finished the motorsports program. Others are shop formans and things of that nature. Its all what you make of it.

I dont know why you would want to switch from ub to alfred’s, but if u do then might as well go for the gold and do motorsport tech., its not about precticality or anything of that sort. You should go to school for something that you are truely interested in. If your true interests are in auto repair, then go for auto tech., if ur into motorsports then thats where u should be. “Its all what you make of it”, if u wanna do something then do it, and do it with confidence.

I go to Universal Technical Institute in Chicago to be an auto tech. I went to school and got a Business Degree before I came here and wasn’t happy with it. UTI is a good school if you are thinking about moving out of the area at all. Def not a big party school, really helps you stay focused and they really prepare you for ASE testing.

Well, I am going to look at UTI too, thanks for the suggestion.

:word: I went to Alfred for two years, but for engineering. Either way I had a '89 Super Coupe with the 3.8 SC 6 in it. Anyways it needed a tune up and I knew a few kids that were in the program but were in their first year. So I found out that I can get work done for free. She needed a tune-up and I just bought lower springs and a set of Tokicos for it so I decided it was low risk work that they couldn’t screw up. Well the springs/shocks went fine but it was taking them forever to get it done. I went to check on the car and they had started to remove all teh intercooler piping to do the plugs. I ask them why, because you just need to go from the bottom to get to all the plugs, they said they couldn’t get to them :meh: from the top. After a short discussion with them I explained that you do it from the bottom and realized that I knew more about cars then most of the students that have been there for two years. Either way that was my experience.

Hahaha, well maybe ill have a headstart on them then. I dont know, Im kinda bummed now, actually, because I need to stay at UB for atleast one more semester to retake a few classes and get my GPA up so it looks better as a transfer…
