University Opinions (mechanical/automotive Engineering)

Yes i know, in the car chat, but where else could i put this?

Anyways, I’ve been accepted (early acceptance too!) to Ryerson, Guelph, and UOIT for mechanical engineering, and McMaster for computer Engineering. I know a bunch of guys on here are taking some form of engineering and a lot are at UOIT. My goal is to graduate and get into the auto industry either with a vehicle manufacturer or with an aftermarket manufacturer of some sort. My grades are great and I’m not worried about difficulty with passing or anything. Essentially I’m looking to go to a school that loves cars as much as I do and has lots of extra-curriculars to do with cars, such as the SAE dune buggy and formula SAE racers. I hear there is a good group of guys in Oshawa with 240’s and skylines and stuff and that’d be cool but I dunno about Hamilton and Guelph for meets and such.

Any input or opinions on these schools would be appreciated cause I gots to choose soon and apply for res and all.

And don’t flame cause it seems dumb to you, I’m just asking for opinions from people that have experience before i fork over $75k into schooling.

Thanks

I went to Guelph, not much of an engineering school from what i recall.

I have nothing great to say about the city either.

a lot are at UOIT? LOL that would prob be my group of friends which ive converted to 240 way of life.

anyways, if u want the better party scene, guelph, but engineering degree at guelph? REALLY? … school for the arts. but TONS of bitches.
Ry is good. dt life, parties are good. girls are good, engineering i hear is real good.
UOIT… well if u want any vag, look elsewhere. if your cool with a cockfest, the engineering is epic. thats what uoit is made and known for… eng! plus its automotive vs just mechanical

NOW. automotive engr vs mech… u can get an automotive based job almost as easily as an auto eng. THOUGH in different fields of the eng. process.
now taking a mech course is easier than an auto course, less classes. simple.
that being said… the first 2.5 years are the same… pretty much. so u can decide later on, once you in…

NOW i hope you did think youd be working on cars in class  LOLLLL so in the end whether you take auto or mech… your just gonna be doing math and physics all day in every class anyways… LOL

as for extra crap at the school… uoit’s SAE racer team is shit. LOL bunch of dumbass. id go to Ry or UofT for those…
as for 240/skyline/proper tuners… we got it. lots.

oh and UOIT is the most $$$$$$$$$$. just fyi! and the campus is blah. nice and new and fancy. but blah. no good food, hella $$ food, nowhere to study. so packed!!!

questions?

^^ novel material right there lol.

I’m def interested in the Formula SAE and i don’t give a damn if they are dumbshits. I’m really leaning to UOIT and not concerned about parties or girls cause thats not what i’m going for. Purely studies cause my girl we’ll be visiting all the times and can fuck on command, and sammiches too so no worries about food lol. My main concern is whether or not i’m gonna be smashing my head on bricks cause everyone there is gay or doesn’t know shit about cars but likes lambos lol. Too much of that shit around and i’d like to fit into a place where they know their shit. UofT is not an option cause i don’t like it and guelph is not really in the picture.

What about McMaster? Its a toss up between UoiT and McMaster right now. And i hears you guys at UOIT use Solidworks only? no Inventor? gotta change up my styles lol.

Edit:

And i have no intention of going into automotive right away. Its the mech eng program with the business management option that i’ll be taking and i plan to specialise in automotive or mechatronics later. Don’t wanna limit my possibilities to just vehicles right away.

like driftacular said during your undergrad you will spend most of the time doing a lot of math, physics and not much to do with cars. But with that said you will gain a lot of knowledge as to how something works and why it works the way it does which will help you work on pretty much anything that moves. But if i were you i would give mcmaster a shot, computer science has a lot do with todays technology and finding a job will be much easier. What is it that you don’t like about UofT?

well as for car ppl, there alot of brown ppl … which = ricers.
but if u find the crowd like me and my pplz, youll survive.

youll go nuts with the amount of mechanically DEclined ppl at ANY school… or tuner scene… the good part of it isnt THAT big when you really think about it compared to general dumbasses who will talk like they know a spec of info… like yo i can get you rims bro!! 17in CHROMEEE broooo CHROMEEE. (thats the extent of knowledge of most young car fans at any uni. ) LOLLLL

marat is right… fine fuck u. LOL you do learn alot about HOW, WHY and WHAT. but you wont touch it… physically… LOL

UofT is for gay ppl in the closet like marat here… right? LOL  jk. i like the UofT campus for everything… (i mean all of it… but UofT is UofT…blah. LOL) its harder, and for the same degree.

anyways going to UOIT will expand your options… since its the only uni with auto.

as for using softwares… we using Unigraphics NX for the first 2 years, than your well i dont know what we use in 3rd/4th yet lol, either Solidworks or AutoDesk. anyways… both are pretty much the same shit. and solidworks and autodesk software is what youll be using in fields, doesnt really matter in the end… really depends where you work, once you understand how to use these softwares , moving to another CAD software isnt hard.

in your position and what your looking for UOIT. if your set in stone for mech. than go to mac or ry or uoit… dont matter…

at uoft you get a bachelor of science degree whereas at any other uni you get a bachelor of engineering, not the same lol

actually, both at bachelors of applied science.

anyways lol yah undergrad is not as important as grad studies. youll get a job fine. i really suggest picking a uni youll enjoy. (i think its the most important)

/\ ? UOIT you get a bachelors of engineering.

Tis what i’m thinking. My worry is that mechanical is not the way to go as RUSSKII pointed out. I like computer also and its pretty easy to me since i’ve taken highschool level computer eng courses. Just worried about whether all this fuel nonsense and the way of the economy is gonna screw any chance of a job in mech eng. Computer eng is sorta the way of the future right? Computer assisted systems like suspension and stuff are more common now so i’d be similar work but maybe more pay and more chance of job. And yeah i know its all physics and math lol, i don’t wanna touch a car in school for a while. I do that enough in my free time lol.

I go to Western. Love it here. London is a great town, fun night life.

4th Year Mechanical Engineering is a ball buster…Be prepared to become a hermit hahahaha. Mechanical Engineering is probably one of the most universal and useful degrees you could have. I would stay away from an auto engineering degree in the long run you may narrow down your options.

ETA: Have a look at this and get ready for lots of this!!!

I’m goin into the MoMac Auto BTech program next year… :S

I am a graduate of the Mechanical Engineering Technology Design program at Humber College. Numerous professors in our program told us students that if we wanted to further our studies in university, McMaster and Lakehead offer the best engineering programs.

im trying to quote but it wont let me, maverick you say you’re concerned of fuel prices affecting jobs in the field of mech engineering. automotive is not the only industry related to mech eng. take a look around you, whatever item you happen to see needed to be designed and manufactured. that is what mech eng is all about. like hachi said; a degree in mech eng. is universal, as you will have the skills to design and plan manufacturing for whatever item or product you can imagine.

and as someone else said, these programs are total sausage fests…take buisness instead lol

I dunno if its relevent but i did automotive/ industrial design at humber in toronto. the school was shit but the program was sweet, class sizes were small and you get good one on one time with the prof. Lots of CAD, model making and sketching. I had a Blast at it, now im working in the industry 6 months out of school.

lots to think about. Thanks for all the replies. I’ll most likely go to UOIT just cause i love cars too much and would rather study mechanical than computer engineering. How are the campuses at McMaster and UOIT if any of you have been or live on res? I’d be living on res and wanna be paying for something that’s worth it. Has anybody here completed a degree in either mech eng or comp eng and can vouch for the job availability after grad? What about co-op? does UOIT have a good co-op/internship program going on or am i gonna have to find my own summer employment.

Also, i’m taking the 5 year honours degree at UOIT should i go there and the 4th year is all business management stuffs. Anybody taken that or heard of it? I’m really interested since apparently it only takes another year afterwards to get an mba. Thoughts?

^^ if you want to get your mba get ready to fork over serious cash, but its worth it in the long run

Have to get it anyways cause my girl is studying business management and such so the mba has become a necessity for us, kinda. Unless they release a new skyline by then, might just have to pick one up instead lol.

Uoit man, if you love cars it was awesome. Plus they have the second biggest wind tunnel in the world now! I’m was in the first graduating class of auto engineering at uoit. I’m now working for a tier 2 supplier as a quality engineer and poke yoke designer. I graduated at a weak time in the auto industry so I took a job in automation first. I was working 3 months out of school. I took a job in the auto industry a year later. I have a lot of friends that went to many different schools I have ended up having the most luck finding work. I feel uoit excels with CAD course’s which helped me make an eye catching portfolio.

this was my capstone project, 3 year project to make an electric car out of a stock saturn vue

bring back mini baja

there aren’t many girls at the university at all but the college is good. I met the girl i’m living with now so its all good.

I’ve just completed my first year at UOIT, I was initially in Automotive but I transferred to Mechanical so I could have a wider array of options when I leave school.
Oshawa’s pretty jank but it makes it easy to focus on school work.
I was very pleased with the majority of my profs and courses ( Except Chem, that was a whole ball of ugly )
Everything was well explained and accessible and having everything on a laptop/internet is very nice ( until the power dies or you laptop fries )
I haven’t really been to other schools so I can’t compare too much but if you do decide on UOIT do everything possible to not be in the Simcoe rez. It’s dirty as hell, although someone was cooking meth in the South Village so I guess it equals out.
