Well i accepted Uoit friday so its pretty official. Just applying for Osap and res (sadly). I’m jacked to join the Fsae thing looks sick and is right up my alley. Should be good!
I’m just hoping that i can snag a job in the summer and get a nice job after graduation to pay off the osap. 25 grand a year for 5 years is a lot of money.
ya come out to the formula meet at mosport in september i would say then.
If your real intrested in the FSAE team I can get you a log on to the forum and you can see whats going on
I’d say you’d be fine for getting a job, just keep your eyes peeled throughout the year and make your applications early. Same goes for jobs after graduation, start looking in your 3rd year and get a feel for what is out there and where you might like to go with your degree
Just thought I’d chime in here even though you’ve already made up your mind. I’m in auto eng at UOIT, going into my 4th year. The auto program has been pretty good to me here. It’s very similar to the mech program, with only a few courses switched around. In fact, I think we even take more courses than mechanical students (6 courses a semesters vs 5 for most mech semesters). If you aren’t sure whether or not you want to work in the auto industry, just take mechanical along with some automotive electives…that would be the best way to go. The courses and profs have been pretty good for the most part. In mechanical/auto, you will learn the same material as any other engineering school. If you are dead set on taking an automotive program, that leaves you with the option of going to Windsor or UOIT. I highly recommend UOIT for its auto program (even though I don’t have any real experience with windsor other than a tour).
There are some negative aspects like any other school though. The campus is really small and Oshawa isn’t the most exciting place to live. So if you are looking for a good campus life, look into other schools. My only other real complaint would be the laptop deal. The laptops are great and its awesome to have all the software licenses available on hand. The school advertises that the laptop fees are included in tuition. In reality, it is included under it’s own section as a “mobile learning fee” and it’s pretty expensive.
Like I said before, you’ll learn the same stuff here as any other university. UOIT doesn’t have the prestigious name like other schools so you have to make the most of what you learn. Join clubs, join the engineering society, join sae, do volunteer work, take tours, take your capstone serious, etc… With the new ACE building and ties with GM, you will have all the resources you need to land a good job out of school.
You clearly haven’t looked closely at any of our cars and have not talked to any of our dedicated members. For such a new school, we have a pretty good team. We have relatively little support from the school, very few members, and have a tiny budget so we are kind of the underdog for canadian teams. We spoke with some of the top international teams during the last competition and they were amazed at what we accomplished for such a new school.
