Anyone ever done one of these before? A co-worker needs it done on his truck, got a quote for a grand and was asking me if it seemed right. Shop was quoting somewhere around 12-13 hours, which seems like an awful lot for an experienced mechanic. Not sure if there is anything special on an Xterra though.
hmmmm…it not horrible…its a chain driven motor i believe so there is a lil more work with the timing case when taking the head off…it is a good 2 work day job…
EDIT…
I take that back…its belt driven so its not as bad…1k is too high…being belt driven its not too bad…but still some work…not 1k worth though looking at teh service manual its doesnt seem like it would be a horrible job
xterras are pretty bare under the hood, i have one. its not tight at all. i think its a bs number, but i think all shops charge a lot for that kind of work.
maybe don can give him a better price?
u got understand shops also send heads out to get them check there usually 80 bucks a head. there prolly also inclusing a coolant exchange thermostat timing belt and oil change
What’s so much more difficult about chains? I prefer chains myself.
Supercharged or not. 12.7 without supercharger. That is what the book calls for.
12.7 * 75/hr = $952 labor.
Sounds about right.
edit- Experienced mechanic or not, they should do the job by book rate. Unless it’s a friend.
Otherwise, Your friend can pay 15 hours of labor for a 13 hour job… for example.
Wow, I’m shocked that it has a belt. I thought nissan stopped using belts across the board in 1990.
belts require less tear down…there is no sealed case to take off with a belt…the chain motors u have to take the entire cover off…generally the belts IMO are a lil easier to disassble…but i like chains better though…
i also thought Nissan had completely switched over to belts late 90s until I looked up timing kit on Courtesyparts.com and its a belt
Sounds good guys. Guess a head gasket takes a bit longer than I thought.
Probably because I just throw shit back together any which way and just hide the extra parts I always end up with. :snky:
Yea…i have to help Venompwr do a head gasket on this maxima and that aint gonna be fun
