This idea is fundamentally wrong in every way. Why? Because it is expensive? You budget for everything else, why not health insurance. You work hard for stuff that you want, maybe even a second job to afford those upgrades and amenities.
The list of reasons why health insurance costs a fortune is very long. Personal responsibility is at the very top of that list. Much like car insurance and homeowners insurance, every single time a claim is made it raises the price of everybody else’s insurance. Costs are out of control because so many people ditch the bill. They go to the ER and then never pay.
The very instant health care is available to everyone, the flood gates will open. Every single ER, doctors office, hospital, EMS, and pharmacy will be completely overwhelmed. It will take months to be seen for routine care, weeks to be seen for urgent care, and there is a really good chance your life threatening injury will kill you during your 14-20 hour wait in the ER.
Think twice before you smoke, drink, race dirtbikes, skydive, swim with sharks, mountain climb, have babies, start your own fight club, or do whatever other self destructive behavior it is that you want to engage in. Think about the cost and think about the burden you impose on others.
There is one place that I totally and completely advocate paying for your health care, food, salary, and education. The Armed Forces of the United States. Go enlist. The health care for you and your dependents is free.
