HELP! 99 Grand Am GT, heater core problems!

So tonight comming home from work, the heat in my car stopped working and starting blowing out a mist of anifreeze. I called my dad for some advice and he told me to get a bottle of “stop leak”, which i was lucky enough to find at jubilee at 10:30 tonight. I poured the whole bottle in my engine coolant resivoir(sp?), as directed and the temp gauge was still higher than normal driving home and the mist was still comming from the heater vents. Im pretty sure theres a leak in my heater core, hopefully the bottle should do the trick, but has anybody had this problem before?

your gonna need a new heater core no matter how you look at it. I had a break in mine a little while back, interior was soaked with antifreeze.

just keep driving around with your heat on full blast until it runs out of coolant to spray at you. make sure your windows are UP when you do this or else it won’t work. sorry to hear man, i was really looking forward to you working for me tomorrow. bump for some help.

yeah sorry man, if i could get out to holland, i can get the rodeo or my ranger, but it doesnt look like thats going to happen before 11 tomorrow. this is the absolute worst time for my car to shit the bed. i cant really do anything until my dad gets back in town on wedesday and im not so sure i can fix it myself. i mean iv got the garage, but not the slightest idea what im doing.

sounds like a pita, try bringing it to that place up on center

thats probably what ill end up having to do, but if i can fix it myself without having to pay for a tow and the labor, ill do that. i need to find the problem first though.

Stop leak is the worst idea ever. It does way more bad than good especially in a car with dex cool. I’d get it to a shop immediately and tell them you put stop leak in the car so after they change the heater core they flush out the coolant system thuroughly.

heater cores are a bitch to repair at home unless you are super lucky.

I had to pull my entire dashboard to replace mine.

yeah, you’ll probably have to pull that dash to get to the heater core. wanna go to m&m tomorrow when i get out of work?

yeah ill take a ride with ya, im going to be stuck here playing video games all day with ross the boss. haha maybe i can find some shit to put on ebay to pay for my heater core, cuz id rather not buy one from m&m

ok, dumb ass, I don’t need to go to m&m. i was offering to go with you to help you get a heater core. if you just want to sit around and play cock hero or whatever you play with ross and tom, then i’ll leave you to it. if your just gonna play games with your gay roommates, then i will join you in that endeavor and we will leave m&m out of this.

haha very nice. first off, my roomates aren’t gay. second, im not so sure i know what cock hero is? maybe you would like to inform me of this, so i know what your up to next time your around me. and third, the endeavor is to find out, why it is, your civic is so slow.

so, we’re not going to m&M tomorrow?

well im not going to go buy anything yet until i get it looked at by somebody above my automotive knowledge expertise( not too hard to find). so im going to have to pass on the trip to m&m. and that its raining out so i dont really feel like walking around that shithole in the mud.

i was trying to help. i guess we will just have to play video games tomorrow until your car fixes itself.

Nevermind.

I replaced the heater cores on my 4runner last week…
NOT FUN…

Your heater core has a leak in it, the mist is the antifreeze being blown thru the vents by the blower fan.

You have 2 options. Replace the heater core, or snip the lines and route that shit around the heater core and be heatless.

Replace it with a new unit yourself. I did my moms durango and you literealy have to take the whole truck apart for it. It wasnt bad. Ive done my camaros, gn, and a buick century. So it shouldent be that bad. I dont think you have to take the dash out.

i agree with you all the stop leak is, is little metal flakes running through the cooling system through the water pump and stuff. empty the system buy a heater core ( i have them at autozone for like 40 bux lifetime warranty ) get it flushed at delta sonic or something its worth the money.
