hey my buddy has a 98 grand am and his heats been f*in up. He took it to a mechanic they said the anitfreeze was leaking and he needed a new heater core. Well we replaced the heater core, still no heat, so we though it was the thermostat, replaced that still no heat…
anyone have any advice besides blowing up the car or selling it. he needs it for another 6 more months till he saves up for a new car… Thanks
its a 2.4, the water pump is on the back side of the engine and the thermostat is underneath it on thtis model. no leaks and the hoses are fine. He is throwing codes so I told him to go to advanced and find out which ones hes throwing… i didnt think about the water pump not circulating…
oh no’s the dreaded 2.4 water pump. i think that pays like 6.5 hours or something at a shop. little bit of a pain in the ass. any who
the main thing is is the car over heating? if its running at normal temp then i doubt its the water pump. my heater core was clogged on my grand am. but you replaced it so that wont be a problem. i also remember having a really really hard time bleeding the air out of the heater core. i blew compressed air thru the heater core to get rid of the clog then i couldnt get heater core to bleed the rest of the system was fine i never over heated but i had trouble getting it thru the heater core. check the line coming OUT of the heater core and see if its flowing coolant. (obvious question but is the fan working for the blower motor)
check to make sure that the coolant is making it thru the heater core. i would guess just pull off the hose on the return part of the heater core and start the car up. if it comes out i would imagine that its good to go. does the 2.4 have the schrader valve above the water pump to let out extra air like my 3.4 does?
don’t think there is a schrader valve on those. the water pump makes hellacious noise when they go. it sounds like a bottom end noise when they go. it is a pain to change did one before not really looking into doing another lol
aka the flapper that tells it to blow hot or cold air? are then run under vacuum? i had to manually wire up my old f-150 winter all heat summer no heat.
