This is HUGE for our area.

ALBANY, N.Y. | NANOTECHNOLOGY

The capital of New York state is becoming a big player in a field that deals with small things—nanotechnology. The city now boasts more than 4,000 people in the industry, centered on the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering at the University at Albany. Albany is becoming a big player in a field that deals with small things—nanotechnology.

The school has doubled in size during the recession to its current 800,000-square-foot complex. Dozens of nanotechnology companies have established a presence there to take advantage of research facilities and business incubators; since 2008, nearly 50 new start-ups have launched within its walls.

The build-out was part of a state plan, formulated years earlier, to revive the economy in upstate New York. Financing came partly from the state and partly from corporations like International Business Machines Corp. (IBM), which now have offices there alongside entrepreneurs. That means companies can share the cost of equipment and labor—and start-ups get to associate themselves with big names.

“The prestige of being here and the credibility is amazing, which helps when you are talking with VCs and investors and large companies,” says Primal Fernando, CEO and chief technology officer of Resource Management Technology Systems Inc., which moved to Albany from La Junta, Colo., last year. “And the equipment available here is not available elsewhere.”

Many companies are launching off-campus, as well, in laboratories that are opening in once-vacant buildings. And financiers and other vital players have been moving in to be a part of the action.

“Venture capital has been growing to feed the innovation,” says Alain Kaloyeros, a physics professor and senior vice president of the college. “Suppliers and law firms are moving to the region to support this ecosystem, so it will be quite an exciting venture to watch.”

We need to stop this big government plan! /Sarcasm

Seriously though, this is incredible. I am very proud of Albany, and the surrounding area. This is a boomtown in the last 15 years or so.

Can’t wait to move outta hurr

hahah i was about to post same thing… cant wait to sell my house to one of these nano suckers.

Why’s that?

Oh boy

Because I can?

i find that to be a totally good reason.

:lol

While I can’t say I like the way the state is run compared to some of the others (from what I understand - I am no political expert)…I will say the city itself and this area of the country in general is pretty nice. It’s not a bad place to live if you don’t live IN the city itself. But it has much to offer as far as things to do, things to see, places to go (the city and this area). Then you have Boston, NYC, DC, Montreal all within a decent drive from here.

That being said, honestly, if I could find a guaranteed job like I have here down in Clearwater/St. Pete/Tampa, FL…I’d be on my way down right now. LOVE that metro area.

Same on the Florida. Not until I retire though. It’s not that I don’t like this area. I’d like to transfer to Westchester. I’d make a killing down in the Elmsford office.

Really? I just came back from St. Pete’s. I thought the area was kinda depressed and devoid of young people.

As of this year we are the world leader and innovator for the new format in production format going with a 450mm wafer.

That’s right, little Albany is the world leader and sole source of research and next generation technology production.

Fine with me lol. I have a couple friends down there and that’s all I need. I don’t go to bars or clubs or any of that stuff. I don’t need to live in a place that has amazing night light or something. Just nice places to grab dinner with some sites to see, a good economic/job market environment, and good weather. That’s all I really need.

Winning. I gotta say, being a UAlbany student I’m pretty proud of the work that place is putting in to develop the campus and the technologies not only there, in the area, but in the world.

As a HUGE sports fan…this is HUGE for the university on a sports front believe it or not. Why?

  1. More money being dumped into the University means more for them to spend on the school in general
  2. Because of #1, they are building a brand spankin new football field. Ground breaking is in August.
  3. Evidently, from what I have heard via rumors, UAlbany football team which is pretty decent is moving up to the CAA conference. This is BIG. Going to bring in better players, which means better teams, which means even more money, etc. etc. Once the other teams (basketball, lacrosse, etc.) follow suit…that will also bring in more revenue. Lacrosse and I believe track and field are nationally ranked programs (or are very close - on the bubble).

UAlbany is quickly going to become one of the countries best universities not only in the class room, but on the sports field as well and when it comes to the community.

Has the work on the 450 been started yet? I was under the impression that work would begin in the new building when all the new tools were in. Then again, I only go by what my parents say, and well…:ninja

They didn’t mention my school’s Nanotech center? Being built, but in a year or two upstate NY between Albany and Utica is going to be huge for Nanotech.

http://www.sunyit.edu/chip/

SUNYIT and UAlbany have launched the Computer Chip Hybrid Integration Partnership (CHIP), an inter-regional, cross-university structure for promoting the nanoelectronics industry.

Funded by $225 million from New York State, IBM, SEMATECH and Intel, CHIP is creating:
The Computer Chip Integration Center (CCIC) at the University at Albany’s College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering for nanotech research and development of “system on a chip” (SOC) technologies
The Computer Chip Commercialization Center (CCCC) at SUNYIT with a state-of-the-art “clean room” for assembly and integration of SOC technologies, a business incubator to attract chip suppliers and contractors, and the first-ever SEMATECH Center in Upstate New York.
A joint UAlbany-SUNYIT educational and training curriculum to prepare workers for careers in computer chip integration and deployment.

Florida is a nursing home for old people who don’t like cold weather

They did:

"The school has doubled in size during the recession to its current 800,000-square-foot complex. This is talking about the Nano complex it self (“the school”). How it expanded it’s square footage, etc. Doesn’t name it exactly, but that’s what it’s talking about.

I don’t like cold weather either. I’d rather it be 90 than 40.

It hit me the hardest when I was talking to these secondhand equipment buyers/sellers based out of Scotia in the cleanroom. The statement was that people in Dresden, Germany know more about what’s going on at CNSE than people in Albany know about it, and that over there people are jealous as hell of our complex. Europe has IMEC but we’re bigger and our research is neck-and-neck with them. And now with 450…the rumor mill has it my boss’ old boss, now heading up the 450 effort effectively, put in the order for a few thousand wafers…at a few thousand bucks each!!! And that’s the lion’s share of 450 wafers actually in existence on this planet. So if you wanna mess with 450mm, you’d better come to Albany, NY, USA because that’s where the wafers are LOL

^ you’re 100% right

450 manufacturers are actually pissed they have to be the frontline to retool their line with very little demand and eat the costs upfront without seeing return for years.

There is still no official support for 450 from ASML or any other major litho player…

450 is pretty freaking big, SiC wafers are where it’s at though for power applications…

Its too bad NYS has to give such big incentives to these companies though, I really wonder how long this boom will last after NYS cuts back.
