I was just looking into picking one up. But with no warranty on the car, and because of this reason Mazda has a TSB out on the VVT actutator going bad and in the '06 early '07 builds which cause the timing chain to wobble around and make noises on startup. I didn’t wanna risk the chance of buying one with no warranty and be SOL cause the owner would have to pay parts/labor at dealership which is $500-1000.
Otherwise it’s a pretty fun all around car but I agree the Mazdaspeed 3 is more exciting to drive.
For DD purposes its fine, gone through 2 winters so far with mine as well. Have only half-way decent winter tires for it and have never had any issues. Also…torque steer is FUN!
if you are going to have a nice summer car you may also consider not trying to be a baller and just get a beater like many of us do. just a thought. a V6 mustang or camaro is very cheap and for the money is probably the most fun RWD car in the winter for the money. If you have the money for 2 nice cars subaru has a very good rep for cheap to maintain and reliable cars so you may want to keep that in mind before you look at a car like the speed 6 or a audi. The less you spend on a winter/DD the more you have for your summer car / living expenses.
I don’t know what your financial situation is and its really none of my business so don’t take offense to the above.
