How badly will I fail inspection?

Background: She’s a 1986 200sx, so I’m pretty sure its a visual only inspection.

Problem: Last year after I got inspected my muffler decided it resented the rest of the car and fell off. The muffler is a double loop, and is among many of the oddities Nissan did to get past the new emission laws (8 spark plugs, 4 cylinders, no HP. Woo!)

So I hacked together a Cherry Bomb muffler and some spare piping to give the appearance of a working exhaust system. The basic setup is:

Cat Conv. > rotting pipe > Clamp > 1ft of new pipe > Clamp > Muffler.

Now its a guarantee that there is an exhaust leak, and almost guaranteed I will not pass inspection.

So here’s my question to you, just how decent must I make the exhaust to pass inspection?

I can get mild steel pipe, may have access to a welder, and would like to keep the $20 muffler (because I’m poor, not because I like it).

One of my other questions is; will clamps pass at all?
The ones that are on there now are not the nicer wide style that cover up the seam. They are the cheaper bent steel bar style that Pepboys sells.

Per NYSI all that is needed is a cat. everything post cat is not cause for failure.

that shit will be fine man. Tracy’s car passed no problem and hers was way worse.

Not an issue

Wow, Thanks guys.

My debt thanks you as well.

Yup as stated no muffler necessary. otherwise stock srt-4’s would fail.
