I just bought a used laptop and i am using windows 2000 profesional. I want to upgrade to xp but when i put in my upgrade cd it wont let me upgrade it it says to install windows xp.
So therefore it is basicly telling me to wipe out my system and start it with windows xp.
I have backups of everything i need on the laptop so should i go ahead and wipe it out and start with windows xp? Also i dont have the boot disks or anything for the laptop so should i just keep going and install xp?
If i need anything i can redownload the drivers later right?
thanx
yes u can get drivers, i would just let xp do its thing.
Well i installed xp and everything is fine so far. do you guys think it will be ok to erase my old operating sytem files.
upgrade cds are only to upgrade if u alrdy have xp installed.
I got that part setup.
I just have one more question.
I have verizon dsl hooked up on my home computer/ but my laptop is not efficent enought to download and run verizon dsl. so is there a way i can get my internet to work on my laptop other than trying to get verizon setup on it?
I used an upgrade CD on my Windows ME system, so I’m not sure why it was an issue. And as for network issues, broadband modems usually terminate in a plain ethernet connection (10 bT), so XP should recognize it if plugged in. OTOH, you may be better off getting a network router/hub and plug in through that. XP will recognize plain wired ethernet either way, so there should be no additional issues.
I am just having trouble getting on the net with my netgear wireless usb card?
Ah - first you should have the latest USB drivers. After that, the original XP (not SP2) had lots of fun with wireless card setup. Is the card recognized? You should be able to check in the Device Manager to see if it’s active. After that, you’ll have to set it up with the network you’re using (and you might have to shut off your security temporarily for it to work at first).
fixed for now. lol.

I’d wait a while - maybe a couple week’s worth of regular use - to see if this version of XP is stable (should be, but who knows).
