i guess im still “into” it, but standing around in parking lots and street racing is not my thing anymore, i just stick to doing my racing at the track. my views have changed a lot the past few years as ive grown older, a lot changed for me when i had two friends die because of it…
People getting more responsible with age?
this too, now a lot of it is useless drama
I think the internet has a lot to do with some of this change. People have more resources to build faster cars now, and everyone knows based on the millions of drag racers on the internet, that running 13’s is ordinary and now considered dirt slow. If the internet didn’t exist, and people were not able to use it as a knowledge resource for building fast stuff, cars would still be A LOT slower.
The only problem with the internet knowledge is that it takes money to execute. Some have it, most don’t. My car may be able to run a 13-14, but I am not gonna show up to a drag event just to get laughed at by the people who have the money to run 9’s. It just doesn’t even seem like it would be fun.
Ive definitely slowed down, I use to be a Mighty regular, and always looking for ways to go faster, and although I have a heavily modded car, I did start with a 90hp and just kept fixing things as they broke and I definitely don’t spend as much as I did, im really enjoying traveling and think I will continue to spend more of my discretionary income this way. see how many places i can drive poor Helga.
But i don’t think i ever saw myself as having a designated fun car, Ive always like to drive what I have, daily. so I never sit somewhere thinking I wish I had my… here. But do enjoy admiring other peoples work no matter how or what they have done to a car.
The internet was around 5 years ago…lol

I stopped hanging around mighty when its was 60% kids who had POS cars and hung out there every night because they couldn’t find anything else to do.
I had no issues hanging around and talking cars…go racing…cruise…
It was def. a better “scene” back then.
I’m still very much into cars, however they are no longer the priority they once were for me. I don’t attend meets either like I once did, again mostly due to the fact that it’s just a diff. group of people that I can’t really relate to. I still talk to a lot of my old car friends, but we’ve all moved on with our lives in diff. ways…
The knowledge to build stupid fast cars hasn’t always been around on the internet for that long, though.
Without the internet your only option was to walk into a store like K&S and see what they sold for your car. Not like turbo kits for hondas were being advertised on T.V
yeah, exactly my point.
When I was in high school and first years of college I had no idea that so much information on swaps and builds was available on the internet. I only knew what some friends told me, and the BS that speed shops were feeding. I figured 13’s was stupid fast, and that 10 second cars in F&F were unobtainable.
It’s easier to have fun when you are ignorant to the realities.
I love the poll results…
It should have been are you still involved in the local car scene auto cross, meets, drag racing, street racing…
People don’t have to be involved in meets and racing to enjoy cars. Either that, or some of us have different definitions of “into”.
I’m into buying them and driving fast. Not into wrenching in the slightest. As for meets, if they involve beer, broads, or burnouts I’m in, but probably not talking shop in a parking lot.
I’m still into cars and I haven’t driven mine in 3 years, lol.
I genuinely enjoy this hobby
/nutshell.
most 70’s-80’s cars are ugly, i’ve always wanted one, why not do it before i’m 60?
People will always be into cars even if they don’t have one.
I assume this poll was based more on being active in the car scene.
I didn’t have car for a few years so I didn’t attend meets outside of going to Lancaster and watching friends race now that I have a car again I will be around.
I for one love building and racing cars. I am heavily into the radial tire drag racing, and love watching how fast a lot of guys are going now on small tires. I rarely go to any Mighty meets unless I see people I know and even then I will only stop by for a minute. The street racing really isn’t my thing, as the car is getting completely out of control now. I like all racing in general, and I doubt that will change any time soon. For me it’s almost a sickness. Once going fast, all you want to do is go faster. First it was getting into the 9’s now it is 8’s… I figure you are only young once, so I might as well enjoy it while I can…
I’ve never really been into the car scene per se, but with the right car I’m still into the hobby. I think I was into cars much more back when I really didn’t know any better. 1996 is when I bought my Mustang, at age 16 when it was what I could afford and also a car I thought was cool. No doubt I had many happy miles with it, but I feel this was because back then the ‘competition’ was nothing impressive, so my 12 second car felt much greater than what it really was. Now, with factory cars having advanced as far as they have, my driving enjoyment has greatly diminished. I still tinker with it to make it better (IRS swap last summer)…but for the most part I feel it’s an uphill battle.
Now to slightly contradict myself, when I built the '55 a few years ago, that completely changed my viewpoint on the car hobby. That car for me was a way to be creative, design/fab my own unique pieces, and provide a gift of sorts to my dad. You can’t buy that. I recall ITCHING to get home from work and get to the garage until 2am. As I look back on it, I’d prob change 95% of what I did…but that justs keeps the desire alive to do it again in the future. With the car now in MN in dad’s possession, I only get to drive it a few times a year…but when I do it’s a rewarding feeling and always brings a smile to my face.
Oh the care scene?
vq30de will be voting no for this one. He hates you and everything you love.
