high school edumacation:
job:Tech ops
pay 45k last yr
also free cable+RR so I guess you could add another 2k on my salary if ya wanted LOL
If I get laid off or am forced to leave the company I plan to get some higher learning. I feel I have the capacity to do much more but lack the knowledge. I wish I didn’t slack-off in high school.
Just the other week I popped 2003 server on my old daytrading rig. Running VMW server with several virtuals. The server is also acting as my domain controller and handling AD (which can be overwhelming with policy crap).
I have 2 tower nodes and 1 laptop node for physicals. I may put my macbook pro on AD, though I’m not sure since it’s a work laptop and I don’t want to do much with it.
Next game will be ESXi server but I have to check the HCL and be sure I have compatible gear.
that could be taught to a monkey…learn networking, not how to lock down user’s desktop backgrounds.
Use different operating systems. Network engineers (or any other serious IT pro, imo) need to know different flavors of linux/unix as well as windows. Even if it’s just basic commands.
my theory on IT is that all of your degrees show that you are capable of learning, all of your certifications allow your employer to comply with their customers requirements (show you can be trusted to touch their equipment)
Pretty much all IT jobs teach you what you need to know after you start. It’s all about proving you’re the right person to hire.
I wasn’t into high school at all even thought i was an 85+ student in everything. Dropped out my senior year… GED that summer and joined the Army National Guard. I had a few BS jobs when i was 19-20 then I was offered a temp position as a technician for the guard working on their equipment during the week. This spring I was hired on full time.
between drill pay and work I made a little over 60k in 2009. It wont make me a million a year but I can say that I’m happy and proud to wake up every morning and put my uniform on.
next week I’m going to be activated to go to Afghanistan and I’m actually pretty excited about that. It’s going to be an experience that most of the people with “normal” jobs cant even start imagine.
oh, and i know my job wont be going out of business any time soon
