How to install Bing's GB short shifter?

It being a knock-off it came with no instructions, and all the ones I’ve found via google have been the megan style where you don’t have to remove the housing plate.

How the HECK do i get at the two bolts that aren’t exposed when you remove the dust cover?!
I tried searching short shifter but it keeps finding it in people’s signatures…

i.e.
here you see 4 bolts… but there are two more further up.

Do I have to drop the tranny to do this???

You have to get to the other two bolt from under the car.

Jack it up and you will be able to get to them. Use a racheting wrench…it’ll be easier…but still a pain in the ass.

noobs. lol j/k, just use a regular 12 mm wrench, ratcheting, box end, open end, whatever. easiest is to use a ratcheting wrench, but its not hard to do without it. just lots of turning . the real bitch for me was to get the god damn shifter plate off… i finally used a crowbar and it came off . i believe bing got the two bolts from underneath, but that’s just an unecessary step imo. too bad you’re not closer, i would’ve been able to help ya.

Milton’s not that far from hammytown

So you just reached in through that hole with a boxend wrench and did it eh? how’d you get the bolts back in?

When it warms up again I’ll try again… maybe my girlfriend’s fingers will fit better,

used a combination wrench. broke em free with the open end, did one with the boxed end, did the other with a borrowed ratcheting wrench. then when they were loose enough i unscrewed and took out with fingers. put them back in with my fingers as well. after you get them out, you should be able to screw them back in quite easily (almost all the way) with just your fingers. then just use the open end of a wrench and tighten em up 8).

Thanks!

no problem lol. dont forget to get/use rtv sealant OR get a replacement gasket from nissan. not to say you’re a n00b lol, but just in case you forget :D.

i got under the car, it was a sinch.

it does have instructions, i just figured it was pretty straight forward.

sorry

yeah you can reach them from inside, or underneath.

If you do do it from inside, watch your hand on the lip. I don’t know if I was just lucky, but the S13 I did this on was RAZOR SHARP.

Nitril gloves and a roll of Duct tape.

I work with wonderful press cut metal cases all the time, I’ve learned my lesson more than thrice.

Heh … yeah. I finally got a pair of the Mechanix gloves, the impact/cut resistant ones. When your friends buy you safety gear, it’s time to start listening to them. I have a bad reputation for bleeding all over other people’s cars.

Anyone that made it to first part out I did might remember I was late getting there because I had to have 16 stitches put in my wrist. Chrome bumpers are sharp.

Just with the way the S13 tunnel and bolts are set up, it’s really easy to pinch your hand between a wrench and the lip.

Maybe I’m just gifted though … I could cut myself on a slice of processed cheese.

So it was warm today and I finally got round to removing all those bolts, picked up one of those ratcheting wrenchs from crappy tire (I truely suggest you own atleast one 12mm one)

BUT…
Where did you guys “pry” the assembly off?
The gasket has been on there so long etc that it’s stuck like it’s glued.
I’m debating getting a rubber mallet and just whacking it a bunch of times on an angle but if any of you have a suggestion/trick I’d appreciate it before I damage anything…

it came right off for me… errrr… jesse.

perhaps you are extremely WEAK!

also,

i LOVE this shifter… it feels better and better every day

seriously, it’s like it’s been glued in place…
The thermostat housing was the same way.
I’ve tried tugging on the shifter but the whole tranny moves, same with prying from the side etc…

Anyone have any tricks? Anyone else have experience with stuck gaskets?

get a flat screw driver and pry it off. just make sure it is a big one with a sharp edge. mine was stuck when i put my b&m on. just take the sunroof out and stand up and yank

Whelp I give up.
I’ve hit it with a rubber mallet till my hands hurt and NOTHING budged.
I guess someone had it off over in Nippon and just crazy glued it back on :frowning:

Gonna put the 6 bolts back in.
One prob, I started this so long ago I don’t remember which holes the LONGER bolts go in.

Any hints?

rubber mallet == bad. the tranny moves around, so the mallet will just move it around and not put much pressure on the actual shifter plate. just get a block of wood and a prybar and yank. i had trouble at first, but just keep on trying, it should come off soon enough… as for the bolts, you’re fucked there, i don’t remember which ones go where… maybe someone else has a clue… or i can take mine apart when it gets warmer :D. in any case, the two short ones go in the back .

I have 4 short ones heh

I tried prying with wood and it just ended up slighty bending the edge of the body “hole” where the shifter comes up into the cabin.
Then I tried smacking it on an angle with a hammer on the wood and that didn’t do anything either…

I can live without a short shifter… I’d rather not destroy something else just to lose 10 degrees of sweep
I just wish mine had been as easy as everyone elses… hehe

Anyone want one?
