How-to: Power Windows Fix - Contact Cleaning

Just thought i’d share.

My passenger side window had slowly stopped working, a gradual death if you will. I used to be able to get it working once in a while, then only the passenger or driver could work it (random), then it was gone altogether. Seems to be a common S13 problem.

Cleaning the contacts, not the harness contacts, but the actual ones deep inside the power window switch actually completely did the trick. Windows work from both sides everytime on my car now.

So maybe this is old news to you, maybe this is just what you were looking for. I just saw some people with the same issues in Technical. So here’s what to try if you’re having the issue (passenger door is assumed in this case):

  1. Disconnect negative battery terminal.
  2. Inside the door handle groove (for pulling door closed), pop small tab out and remove screw.
  3. Pull entire piece upward and out.
  4. Unclip the harness connecting from inside the door to the power window switch.
  5. Take this entire “door handle piece” to a clean work area.
  6. Unscrew the 2 philips screws on the back of the switch (to remove mounting bracket & metal piece) and remove bracket & metal tab.
  7. Use a sharp knife to carefully pull edges around tabs and coax each piece apart.
  8. Inside the yellow plastic piece lie the metal contacts. I used the sharp knife to slowly scrape off the crud of the top and bottom of each copper contact. Do a good job so you don’t have to do this again.
  9. Follow steps backward accordingly to re-install everything again.

Let me know if I missed something or if pics would mean anything to anyone. It’s pretty straight-forward.

&
decided not.

Glad you had the balls :stuck_out_tongue:
