How to replace broken exhaust mainfold stud ?

One of the studs on the sr head is broken by previous owner. As I understand, the only way to get it out is to drill it and use special tool to screw it out. Any suggestions on where to get the tools, especially the borers to drill the hard steel stud.

/thx!

You can also weld a nut to the broken stud and turn it out.

It depends. Is the stud broken flush with the head? If so get a left hand drill bit and drill it out. If it goes well you should just be able to re tap it to the same thread pitch. If it doesn’t go well you might have to use a helicoil. But if the stud sits out from the head try some vice grips or like nate10 said just weld a nut on the stud and pull it out. And use lots of penetrating oil!

Yep, drilling sounds like best idea, cause the stud does not stick out, so there’s no way to grab it. I wonder where to get the drill bits that will take hardened steel though? And are these available for left drill?

Welding something to the stud sounds great, but will it hold on the hardened steel (10 i believe)?

Thx

Most metal drill bits will work and you can probably pick one up at home depot. Just make sure you drill slow ( it makes the bit cut better) and use lots of lube. And you would have to be a very skilled welder to weld something to it if it’s not sticking out

use a cobalt drill bit. They are designed for hardened steel.

Used something like this,

went thru the bolt in 5 mins. Conventional drill bits no help.
Right drilling. Then reverse thread bolt extraction bit - went out easy:p

Good to hear it worked out without a problem

Thanx!
