Huge difference

I have been having some drivability issues and a slightly (not really that slight) rich condition lately. So I was finally able to track down a new air filter and rotated the MAF ~30*. Huge difference! No more hick-up after idle, shifting is smoother and power feels quite a bit more linear, and mileage is better. Best mod I’ve done in a while.

 to proper maintence.

You would be surprised how much havoc a improperly positioned maf can do to your a/f

realy ? i wouldnt expect a tilted maf to make a difference to a/f ratio

why does it screw up the a/f ? any idea ?

hmm. never knew having a maf turned will fuck up readings. I could see it happening if you have a bend in front of it and its not getting a direct flow of air. Also cleaning the maf is a good idea.

MAF meassure aif flow then tells the ECU, “hey Mr. ECU, we have this much air flowing in.”

The ECU is all like “word.”

And then the ECU takes in account throttle posistion, O2 sensor, his horoscope and then tells the injectors, “Hey assholes squirt more/less fuel.”

But here is the problem, the MAF only meassures a little iddy bit of the air coming in. From that the ECU calculates the total amount of air coming in.

If the MAF is obstructed just right, the air filter is too close, FI is too close, the air coming in is too turbulent, yada, yada… The reading the MAF gets could be very wrong in proportion to the actual amount of air coming in.

Here is an example of something bad for your MAF.

When we gonna get together and tune the damn SHO

fairgentleman pretty much summed it up. If the MAF doesnt get an accurate and steady flow of air passing through it, it could get some bad readings and give you alot of trouble with a/f.

for example theres a CAI kit out for 03-04 cobras that alone by itself requires a retune due to the big difference in airflow and repositioning of the MAF.

ah ok, that makes sense now that i think of how toms MAF is , with the square tube that the sensor sits in

any tubing that forces the maf to draw more from the outer section then the inner secion would screw up airflow reading

gotchya

fairgentleman Z… in that pic, what makes that so bad? because its open with no filter or tube directing air into it?

bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

the beer holder returns

  :mamoru:

Could it possibly be the same one???

No, an air filter was used with that MAF. Z32 MAFs, as well as most MAFs like to have a straight shot of air coming in. A good rule of thumb is to have at least 12" of straight smooth tubing before a turbo.

Tubro sucks mucho air -> air is confused how to come through the twisties ->

Either some air comes in too quickly by the sensor and the ECU is like “oh shit AIR, more fuel more fuel.”…RICH

Or the air is moving slowly by sensro and the ECU is like “bah, we don’t need that much fuel.”…LEAN

Think of a current of a river. You can play the part of the sensor. The area between the river banks can be consider the MAF as a whole. If the river takes a sharp bend the water flow at the tight bend is slow but the opposite side is fast. Say you are in the “fast part” and all you can measure is fast moving water or vise versa. You then send that data to the ECU and the ECU can account for the total flow. But the “fast part” is not how the entire volume is moving.

k… so the amount of air sucked in across the surface of the MAF will be different in different spots because of that sharp bend
i never really did much research on MAF’s since my neon uses a MAP

 +1

classic pic

you ever try putting the maf post turbo?
