Hurricane Irene

:bigclap:

Hurricane Irene completely demolished the pier Atlantic beach in NC. Storm surge of 7.5 feet means that major flooding has and continues to occur.

Pretty happy I moved back from Ft Eustis which is right near Virginia beach

yeah dude, Virginia Beach and Norfolk area is next for Irene.

I just watched some videos on weather.com. 10 foot waves are crashing ON the dunes, basically less than 10 feet from houses. They are reporting that flooding on the “sound side” will probably occur later in the day.

That bitch, Irene, just cancelled my Labor Day Weekend trip to Ocean City, MD…

I’ve been dealing with hurricanes for the past 7 years, and it was moving from warmer water to cooler water coming up from florida. It certainly didn’t get any stronger as it moved up and it only continues to weaken.

Well as stated above, it’s already completely destroyed a pier at the beach, and reports are now coming in that a levee was breached on the intercoastal and that major flooding is occurring.

Looks like good preparation is probably paying off.

There’s no doubt that coastal areas will get flooded but as for inland where the news was hyping it up so much even in places like new york, it’s simply dumb. It’ll be some wind and rain.

I’ve been through category 3s and I believe a 4 in a coastal city and everything turned out fine and there were no deaths. It’s the idiots who live in trailers who refuse to evacuate that cause death tolls to go up because those structures simply can’t handle the winds. Yes it sucks to pack up and leave where you live but knowing you live in a structure that can barely stand up to a group of people pushing on it should give you your first hint.

Another are the idiots who actually decided to go to the beach or the pier during the storm, sorry but you’re going to get what you deserve when you decide to go knowing the waves are 15+ feet with 70+mph winds. I’d say if there are any deaths due to this hurricane (North of South Carolina) 95% of it is the fault of that person. I haven’t checked to see if there are any yet but I did hear about that pier.

Edit: Just want to say I meant that for inland NY not NYC, they will have to deal with water levels rising

I never claimed it wouldn’t be a bit destructive but it really is not a powerful hurricane. The hype is simply because one never hit land north of south carolina before.

good thing I am out of work right now. I am sure DirecTV would be sending my ass east to fix their fucked up work.

Yeah, people are going crazy around here.

im stuck in CT had to play last night, figured I’d make it out in time…nope.

stranded! lol. it’s raining here a bit nothing crazy.

This thing is a category 1, the lowest category other above tropical storm…

CNN and other networks have all these images and videos of total floods and mass hysteria… Obama called this an historic hurricane.

why?

Way to search.

i use SON, not nyspeed

i saw that thread now though.

My dad lost everything but cell service which was better than normal for some reason. Tornados and flooding were the worst damage. Some big trees down in the area. It did get up to about the 8 foot water surge mark at the mouth of the pamlico river in NC where my dad was.

Everything turned out pretty much as predicted which is good for people that heeded the warnings.

Storm surge > category

Also, the northern cities never get hurricanes, so they’re just not prepared.

that shit is crazy

lol @ Jeremy. Well played.

It’s definitely being overhyped. By the news because hysteria brings ratings. By the president because he desperately needs to get people looking away from the fact that he has no clue what to do to get the economy back on track. By Bloomberg because he’s hoping this is finally his 9/11 Rudy Giuliani moment (it isn’t).

It is being over hyped… however it is a historic amount of flooding for this area as well, storm surge + abnormally high tide + 75mph winds + all mass transit shut down and ConED turning off power to part of manhattan due to the sea water getting into the grid. I can understand why they are making such a big deal of it. I drove home from a lower laying area in Hoboken last night around 12:30am and went through some areas of 1ft + of water and it isn’t supposed to lighten up till 3pm. Battery park is supposed to be completely under water.
