I messed up v cutting a bolt

Long story short, changing front rotors on an 04 grand am.
had to cut a bolt (i feel like i cut it every time i change the rotors)… done it plenty of times before, but this time i fucked up.

must of either hit the cv joint with a bit too much heat, or some slag hit it.
either way, the cv rubber joint has a tiny hole in it that oozes grease when you poke the rubber.
what’s my best bet here?

Silicone it? CA glue it? or just replace it?

figured silicone is somewhat flexible and would be my best/cheapest bet aside from replacing it.

you can try rtv but if the slit is full of grease forget it. Ive heard of guys using bike inner tube type patches with rubber cement with varying degrees of sucess.

The inner tube trick does work sometimes but your probably better off just replacing the boot for the 20ish dollars it will cost at napa/advance

It’s like $20 and 10 minutes, just replace it.

04 grand am… any easy way to replace this thing?
Only way I can see it coming off is to take off the hub assembly and continue tearing apart.
which… will involve some time and tool renting :o

Okay well maybe 45 minutes to an hour since it’s still assembled. What tools would you have to rent? 32mm axle nut socket? Other than that I can’t think of any, unless you don’t have the bare necessities on hand. But yeah, remove it from the hub, pull off the old boot and install the new one with grease. It’s rather easy to do. I replaced mine in my talon for the first time and it took about 45 minutes without using air. There isn’t any other way you’re getting a new boot on there without removing it from the hub. I see why you’re trying to go the easiest way but, “do it once, do it right”

its a 35mm

:mamoru:

but seriously, just replace it.

lol well i saw 10 mins so i figured there might be an easy way :stuck_out_tongue:

but yea, id have to rent the socket and a torque wrench since mine only goes to 125ft lbs… and i think the hub gets torqued to around 270ft/lbs :s

thanks.

You can buy split CV boots that are two halfs that you glue together without removing the axle.
The only way that method works is if you replace it before any dirt gets in/grease gets out - dont drive it!

ive never had good success with split boots, if your going to replace it id just use a regular boot

i dont know about the torque wrench, but Auto zone has tool borrowing, they lent me a 35mm socket and i didnt even buy my parts from them all i had to do was buy it and then keep the receipt and i was able to return it for the cash. The casheir recomended it so i think its somethin that they do alot

auto zone tool rental is awesome

no time constraints or anything, they charge you for it on the spot and you just bring it back with receipt for a refund…use a credit card and bring it back within a few days and you’re golden

id replace it but ive had a truck come in at work before that had the cv shaft covered in caulk and it seemd to be holding up good

+1
if you pop the BJ there is usually enough room to slide the shaft out
