In-transit tag?

When buying a car from another state, do you need some kind of “in-transit” tag to drive it home? Or, is the bill of sale and notarized title good enough?

My insurance agent said you need an in-transit tag. Seller of the car I am buying said his buddy (car salesman) told him bill of sale works, too.

I know that I have to pay the tax and get registration when I get back to PA. But, what about between there and here?

call JJs

I just called the North Carolina DOT. With a notarized title and proof on insurance, they will give you an in-transit tag for $5.

cool

I bought my car in Ohio and just grabbed some temp tags there that lasted a month. I believe it was like $10 for 30 days?

he got the car home

FYI. In PA, you can get an In-transit tag at AAA.
All other states, the tags are available at the DMV only.

In NC, it was no problem. You take in the notarized title and proof of insurance and $5. They give you a cardboard plate for your car.
