Good 2 part video of why you should never talk to cops even if you know you are completely innocent. The first part is a law professor telling you why you shouldnt and the second is a police officer giving real world examples of why what the professor said was completely true. They are long but very good.
It boggles my mind how quickly people open their mouths to the police and don’t realize their basic civil liberties. If I ever have a run in with a police officer I just politely say I would like to speak to my attorney every time they ask a question.
Prime example of when to keep your mouth shut. You get pulled over and the cop approaches and asks “do you know why I stopped you?” or “do you know how fast you were going?”
I always say something to the effect of “I really have no clue”
I’ve been in the car with friends countless times where they immediately answer yes I was speeding and gives the mph or yeah I was on my phone. Just let the officer tell you. There is a little thing called the 5th amendment… Use it!!
I know there are some police officers that are members on here and/or may be monitoring the site and it is not my intention to make your job harder. I just feel people should understand the ins and outs of the law before dealing with trained professionals such as yourselves.
And always remember kids, kill them with kindness!
I have to disagree with some of this. Honestly, unless you have something to hide there is no reason not to talk to the cops. If your going to be doing something wrong, expect to get pulled over and questioned. Simple as that.
I know a few cops, one of them being an ex g/f and trust me, if you are honest and open with them, half the time, they will let you off the hook as long as you arent getting pulled over for something drastic. I have been pulled over soooo many times for talking on my cell, and I have only got a ticket once. All the other times I was honest and open and they said to go on and have a good day. If I was excersiing my 5th, they would either think I have something to hide or that I am being a know-it-all smart ass. Cops can make your life a living hell but you have to give them a reason to. IMO just be polite and honest. If your doing something wrong then expect to get in trouble. Simple as that.
From what I’ve heard technicaly cops arent allowed to pull you over for just a cell phone… there has to be something else along with it.
Maybe I misheard.
And for traffic infrations ehh id say just be honest like you said… depends on the cop and how good of a reader you are when it comes to people.
Sometimes you can just tell not from their tone buy how a cop carrys himself if hes goign to give you a ticket or not regardless of anything you tell him.
But for something serious I agree with everything he said
I don’t get your logic. You’re basically saying if you do something wrong and get caught by the police you need to rat yourself out.
I’m not saying if you get pulled over just to sit there silently and give em the stank eye. Be polite but it’s not your job to tell the officer what you were doing wrong.
I respect real police work and even wanted to make that my career for awhile. I just don’t like how being a cop has turned into “screwing middle class America out of their paycheck, for doing the same things that they do while off duty.” And that quote came from a directly from a State Troopers mouth.
Yeah I know a few cops who make statements liek that… basicly saying im not going to be a dick and pull someone over for some little shit that I do myself while off duty all the time.
The short version of my logic is this: In my experience being honest and open with the officer has got me out of more tickets than I can remember. Guaranteed that if I gave the officer shit about, “im not talking to you”, he would have given me the ticket and that is that, because when you do that, in their eyes you are either being a smart ass or you have something to hide.
Guys, they’re people too. Talk to them like humans, not like some asshole cop.
Be smart, don’t say anything that directly incriminates you but don’t be snotty about it.
If you’re guilty of something and you know it, you’ll ooze it out of your pores whether you like it or not. Chances are they’ve been in the same situation hundreds of times, it’s like any other job, you learn what to look for.
Learn your rights, use them, but don’t disrespect the officer in the process and he won’t make your life miserable. Which he/she could. Easily. And go home and sleep a full night comfortably. Emphasis on she. :rofl
If you get pulled over for something serious…like 20+ over/reckless/racing, etc., you’re pretty much fucked. Keep your mouth shut, take the ticket, be respectful, get it reduced in court. The time to argue your case is not when there’s cherries in your mirrors, it’s in court.
+1 i’ve rode with cops before and if your just nice with them and dont be a dickhead you have less of a chance of getting a ticket but if your a dickhead then your more then likely gunna get a ticket ive talked to cops and they said if he pulls someone over and there dicks hes gunna get them for everything he can but if not you could get off with a warning … me and a buncha other kids got chased out of a warehouse drifting on morris road and i ran from the cop dumped into a driveway and the other two kids got pulled over and he was like ya i know what you were doing i dont care just dont do it again im not gunna be a dick and give you all tickets and shit but the other kid with the rx7 is an idiot for running :rofl but if your chill with the cop he will be chill back to you there regular people to
You guys might have me all wrong here. I think 90% of my posts in this have all said something to the effect of “be polite” and “kill them with kindness.”
When I’m pulled over, ill use speeding for the example, most of the time in my experiences the cop will ask “do you know how fast you were going?” Which in most cases people tend to say a lesser speed trying to play down the situation. If you’re on a 35mph back road doing 50mph and the cop pulls you over based on judgment of speed and not by radar, when he asks you do you know how fast you were going? Any response over 35mph is complete admission of guilt and they can lawfully ticket you for it. It will also be on the supporting deposition that the driver of the vehicle admitted to that specific speed. Just to me that’s like being stuck in a hole and asking for a shovel.
I’m always polite to cops but there’s just no reason to admit guilt that can be used against you in court, when you can choose your words wisely and not incriminate yourself while not being a dick.
In no way shape or form do I condone being rude or disrespectful to an officer. I dated a female cop as well and also have many childhood friends that are now either on their way to becoming one or already are.
This thread wasn’t made to be anti cop either, I’m just trying to show people information that may benefit them if they don’t already know how the system works.
hell yeah man i def agree like if he didnt clock you with the radar gun and just thought you were going fast if you admit to going over the speed limit thats just dumb i know exactly what your trying to say dont admit shit let him tell you what he pulled you over for
