My 91 240 hatch had 247000km but was in great shape. No rust, new paint, ran strong. It had full load no leather with Hicas. Interior was a 7 Exterior 8-9. What should I battle for. I don’t think I could replace it for less than $4000, what do you guys think?
I’m under the impression that unless you had that car appraised, or have proof that it was in that condition, then the insurance company is just going to give you the book value of the car.
It could be different for thefts, but collisions they like to look at it that way.
^^^ exactly right. For a 91 with that many KM, take 4000 if you can even get it.
Thats not true Aaron. If you can convince the insurance company that the market value of the car is significantly higher than the book value, they will raise it. Look at Canada Trader and print off all the 240s on there. Take that to the insurance company and tell them you can’t replace the car for $x.
Yeah Dave is right. Gather as many references and ads etc as you can and provide them with it, and do your best to convince them you can’t replace it for less than x amount. Good luck!
Don’t bother trying to get the payout raised on account of things in the car like a stereo, CD’s, personal stuff ect… If it’s not on your policy then it’s not covered!
To quote Simpsons:
“Sorry sir, this policy doesn’t cover imaginary items”
Getting other 240 ads and the like is the same thing as proving that your car was in a better state than what the book value is. And so is “convincing” the insurance company. :finga:
How much do appraisals go for? And do you show your insurance? Or wait for something to happen and then show them?
I’ve been thinking about getting an appraisal for my 240. It’s just like the first posters car, good body, good interior, high mileage, but with an SR. If something happens (stolen, crashed etc) I don’t want to get fucked and only get like 4k.
I’m sure my insurance wouldn’t go up that much if I had it insured for appraisal value. I only pay $130/mo for the Spec and 240. Full coverage on both.
I got the car appraised about 4 days before selling it, and just received the full package in the mail not too long ago. Let me know if you want it.

Yeah that would be awesome Mike. Thanks.
I just got off the phone with my insurance and they said they would cover it for appraised value for a small increase in premium.
Canada Trader is your friend! Use the Bargain Finder and the newspaper, whatever you can find that has prices on similar year cars.
When my GTR was written off, the insurance company just looked at the online Canada Trader ads and paid me out based on the average value of other GTRs already landed and for sale
I had my car appraised up here in Grande prairie where there is only one appraisal company. SO they raped me and charged $200 for the appraisal. That’s not he worst part! They took 3 weeks to do it and get it back to me! Then I found out the appraisal didn’t include the parts I had on the car, they said they can’t spend all that time researching these parts and what they are worth! THEN WHAT DID I JUST PAY YOU $200 FOR!!! I was pissed! So then they said " If you give us a detailed list of what’s on the car and what each parts worth we will revise the appraisal with no extra charge" So I did that, and then the guy went away on vacation without telling me! So that took over a month to get back. But when they mailed me the revised copy they didn’t return the original, and whenever I go to see him and get the original he is always “on lunch”! I haven’t had any coverage on my car all summer if someone were to steal it becuase of these jokers! Next time I will drive to a major city to have it done.
Anyway, my car was appraised at $16,000 and my insurance was hardly effected compared to the original $11,000.
Hope that helps someone out!
