Suits should be worn on ALL interviews, no matter how casual the place is. If you’re a programmer, expect to be quizzed. My friend who is on the xbox 360 team had to fix code on a white board that was intentionally broken. They will make sure you know your stuff. Also, the MS campus is dope, enjoy.
if your in a bind for a suit, mine was rather pricey, and I could loan it out to you.
the jacket is a 40 long, and the pants are like 34x34 or something. I have some bling ties too…
buy a new white shirt to go with it and you’ll be all set. Let me know if it will fit you. I’m 6’3 and 220… so if the measurements don’t help, maybe those will.
I skipped the replies but first of all congratulations.
Most jobs will go this route as a phone interview just isn’t going to cut it for a real position. A quickie in person or on the phone will work for co-ops but once you get more experience they need to make sure you are what you say you are, and it’s going to work out much better in person.
Now preferably fly out the night before so you are fresh in the morning, although going to the east coast it may not be horrible.
Wear your suit on the plane, even if you travel the day before, just helps keep it less wrinkly than putting it in a suit case or garment bag (since you can’t hang them on planes any more). If you are traveling the day before just wear a tshirt under the jacket.
Press your shirt the night before, and make sure you just look good. It may seem simple, but you have control over it, and it can hurt you,so you might as well.
Now when you get there, typically you’ll show up and fill in some paper work and have a quick meeting with HR. Depending on the companies you’ll probably meet with whomever brought you in first and go through that interview first. Then you’ll probably tour the facility and/or meet with other groups. Some companies will sit you down with 3 or 4 interviewers at a time instead of a 1 on 1, don’t let it intimidate you. It actually helps prevent those awkward silences that happen in interviews anyway. You’ll probably go to lunch with them, as I’d assume it’ll be a whole day sort of deal. At lunch try and relax and let them get to know you on a more personal level. Try and make some connections there it’ll help.
Whatever you do, don’t lie, they can tell. If they brought you this far, they obviously think you are qualified. It’s more about your interaction with them at this point. If you fumble on some questions, it’s going to be not your knowledge that they are looking at, but how you handle yourself.
Good luck!
thanks for the offer man! just wish i could fit into it. Im not sure what my jacket size would be but im only 5’ 11" and 170. def thanks for the offer tho i appreciate it.
does anyone know any good places to get a not to expensive suit, but not cheapo either?
thanks guys for the support to, i can say that i have never been more nervous
i think the men’s warehouse on union across from walden mall usually has deals like 2 suits for $500, might consider that incase they ask you to come back the following day or something, wouldn’t want to show up in the same suit.
well, let me know if it comes down to you needin one bad…
go to mens warehouse… they take care of me every time i go…
they have some nice suits and some cheep ones so you can decide what you want…
thanks jack.
whats a good price for an average suit? I have no clue since ive never shopped for one.
my first one was about 300.00 for the suit. then you have to add on about 50-75 for a good shirt… and about 100 for shoes…
but like someone said before… you can get one for 100.00…
IT MUST BE A WOLL SUIT :important:
the trick it buy two colored shirts, so if you make the second interview you wear a diferent color, so it doesnt look like you only have one outfit…
also mens wasrehouse has silk ties for 20… and they are all pimp… also i buy pocket squares… if you dont think thats too square i would wear one… but make sure you know how to wear it… also learn how to tie a full windsor…
ok im a total noob to this suit stuff.
- what is a pocket square?
- what is a full windsor?
- how do i learn how to tie a tie?
H&M is pretty good for not too expensive but not out-of-style suits. Keep in mind you will want it tailored regardless of how well it fits off of the hanger.
any suit store will teach you about 4 ways to tie a tie.
BTW - its wool suit.
When you get in there… and you find one you like… take the sleeve of the suit and ring it out… like you would a rag… as hard as you can… then release your grip and rub out the wrinkles. If the wrinkles disappear its a decent suit.
I have about 1200 invested into the suit, not including shoes. Would I do it again? No. Most people, including most of the people interviewing you, can’t tell a JC PEnnys suit from an Armani.
lots of good info in this thread.
honestly – men’s warehouse > * no doubt.
they can teach you everything you need to know in 1/2 hr. they’ll ask what you want a suit for as far as occasions etc and show you a few different styles based on that. once you pick one they’ll usually have some hot-ass chick lay out some shirt/tie combos to choose from, show you some shoes/belts/socks if you need some.
seriously they’ve treated me like gold every time i’ve been there so i’ll always go back to them.
they get five tups in my book.
Just try to act yourself (depending what yourself is, dont act like an idiot if you normally go around acting like an idiot). When a company flys you out for an interview, or just in general, they already know about your technical abilities. That’s what the resume is for. They want to find out what kind of person you are. So be confident and don’t be afraid to say what you really feel (within reason), they don’t want you to be just a “yes” man. That shows you either have no spine or no personality. And generally most companies don’t want that.
Try to judge the situation too. Ford Motor flew me out to Detroit for my interview, went out to this nice fancy resturaunt with a bunch of managers and what not. No one else was ordering drinks (alcohol I mean) so don’t break that trend. I didn’t really even want the job so it was real easy for me to be relaxed (I ended up getting and taking the job though, but quit after a year  ). My last interview over dinner, the guy interviewed me started ordering beers and just wanted to shoot the shit more so. So (twist my arm) I ordered beer too and did the same. Ended up getting an offer the next day.
