Is this true?

my girlfriend was down this weekend and was suprised with how we could smoke at the bars and started saying how in edmonton they are trying to pass a law that drink special night are not going to be allowed. with me moving up there in august its starting to look like i won’t be going out so much if this is so.

You can’t smoke in bars as far as I know.

They are only talking about getting rid of the drink specials at this point. They figure that somehow more expensive drinks are going to reduce crime/bar fights. There isn’t any bylaw or legislation on the table that I’m aware of that is going to outlaw drink specials just yet.

Ya the dirnk thing is just a proposal, they r also proposing to elimiante all glass wear in bars to cut back on glass related viloent crimes. This is getting rediculas if you ask me.

This will never get past the moral police but the best way to stop the antics on the streets at 2:00 am when the bars dump everyone out onto the streets is to let the bars stay open as late as they want.

People will stay and party until they eventually run out of gas. Tired people, no matter how drunk just want to go home and sleep.

The problems at the bars start because drunk people looking for more partying after 2 have no outlet.

YES YES AND YES. Some nights i want ot go home earlier than others. but having everyone leave the bar right after they get drunk is stupid and is the reall problem, not the cheap drink specials.

In Manitoba there was a minimum drink charge. It was either $2.50 or $2.25. I worked in a bar and there were still tonnes of retarded assholes. The only thing it did was force staff to have to pay $1 under the table for drinks.

Why not?

I know in other provinces you can’t, and quite a few places in Calgary you can’t, but there are still quite a few (read: lots) of pubs, etc, where you can smoke.

Edmonton and most of the surrounding communities passed smoking bans. You can’t smoke anywhere inside, including bars, bingo halls, casinos.

wow, i know for a fact that i will stop smoking when i move up there.

but ya, i can’t see myself going out to much unless because i only go out down here during the week for drink specials and never on the weekend.

Minimum drink prices and banning of glassware were just recomendations made by the police to Edmonton city council. They are now conducting a report on bar safety, IIRC. There’s still a chance at this point that it might not happen.

Yeah, nothing’s been decided yet. So if your goal is to come and drink yourself stupid, you can still get away with it.

no i barely drink as it is. i just like going out to the nights with drink specials just so that i won’t spend $100+ just to get hammered myself. anyways its not like i have any friends there. but i am going for school anyways, just looking for an apartment and there is no way i am bringing the 240sx unless its in a decent neighbourhood. found a couple of places for $450-600. should be fun since there are more nissan events up there

Meh, there are plenty of places around here to get drunk for cheap if that’s your goal. And yeah, now would be a good time to move up here, Edmonton is going to be huge for Nissan events this year!

Ahhh just do what we used to do in the good old days.

Go to the Strathcona Hotel “the Strath” drink shitty, watered down, recycled, yet cheap, draft beer, get drunk, then go to the bar where you would actually want to be in the first place.

You used to call it the Strath? People call it the Strat now.

I can see calling it the “Strat” if it was called the Stratcona.

When did the h become silent? Bla, bla, bla. What is the topic of this thread again?

Wow i just stumbled upon this thread. I think the Edmonton Police Service and council should take a trip to Europe and see how the night life functions there. If you have ever been to Europe you know what i mean…or any other country outside of NA.

Which is the stupidest BS around.

I enjoy it a lot. Theres nothing more disgusting than the smell of smoke IMO.
