EDIT: and yes i know the acts of 9/11 were acts of radical Muslims and that is by no means what the majority, especially amongst Arabic-Americans, agree with.

there a two definitions of jihad according to Allah and his messenger Muhammad. the first is the “lesser/outer” definition if you will. the outer jihad is a struggle with other persons, but this type of jihad must be in defense of yourself. the other “greater/inner” struggle is the inner one. resisting outside religions and staying true to the Islamic faith.

it can be interpreted that Islam allows for violence, but its the 2% of Muslims that ruin it for everybody i.e. September 11th, 2001.

thats according to my religion teacher (his interpretation) from this year who had a PhD in religious studies and all that other stuff.
