On the bad side, it looks like I need some hard parts. On the good side, the connecting rods felt great at the crank and pistons which was a shock given how horrible the one is. Rings are all but a distant memory on 3/4’s of the left piston.

Found that it had .20 over pistons when I tore it apart last night, and that I had gravity and the weight on fuel holding on the gas tank. Whatever-at least now I can go through and straighten out some things. For what I have into this thing, no worries. Can’t believe how easily it fired up given what was going on internally. Could have been worse and packed up on me where traffic was heavier.
The kids expression in the background is fitting
I think it’s a motorcycle based on the case.
Yup, 72 Triumph Bonneville.
ouchies. keep us updated on the rebuild.
Lol. The kid is pulling off a Picard.
lol, I was going to say the same thing.
Hoping to have this thing back together in time for the next cars and coffee…even though it is in a whole different world now.
So did your son blind himself with the flashlight or what?
I think I caught him mid overly dramatic reaction to when I said “No, you can’t use the hammer on the bike.” This kid is either going to be an actor, an attorney, an up your ass annoying as fuck middle manager, or a career criminal.
Ordered .40 pistons, rings, rocker box base and cover gaskets, push rod tube o rings, and a copper hg from Empire in OP. Barrells will clean up and can be run so that is good. As soon as the pistons show up measurements will begin, bore, bore my wallet, and then re-assembly.
 to empire. Lee is awesome.
Go through your carbs also, unless you like doing this job 2x. That piston looked a bit burned; the dome on that piston probably has little detonation pits on it too…
Unless my eyes are starting to fail me, couldn’t really see any pitting on the top. I was asking Lee at Empire what he thinks could have caused this issue-could have been a shitty over bore last time, could have been due to it sitting for a bit and leaving marks on the bores and eventually messing up the rings, could have been set too tight, or could have been a dozen other things. Still going to check out the carbs.
So I stopped at Empire Cycles yesterday. Barrels are all bored, nice 45 degree cross in each, pistons, rings, all the gaskets. I asked what I owed him. I was looking at the tally sheet upside down. I thought it said $829 for the machine work. It was $82.99. Under $400 for gaskets, rings, pistons, machine work, etc etc. Couldn’t pick up the parts though as I rode the Norton so that will have to wait until I get a free second. Half tempted to just bring him the bike and have him slap it together. After the Bonneville is all back together, oil leaks from the push rod tubes on the Trident and fast idle will be addressed. Then I will have 3 pseudo rideable British bikes in my garage. I’m not going to say the “r” word as then all of them will blow up in dramatic fashion.
you can’t go wrong having lee do it. I didn’t think he did machine work there, he always referred me to O&L when I asked about bores and such.
Correct, he farms out the machine work.
