And I thought the catalytic converter thefts were strange. Check this one out, again local:
They had hard hats, acted like employees of the electric company. They even put up markers, blocked off the road, and stopped traffic.

yeah, I saw that… pretty crazy, although pretty smart. I would of never thought twice about it if I saw them doing it
as hard as whoever did this needs to be kicked in the nuts, i have to hand it to them…that was very well thought out and some serrious time and brains went into planning it.
when copper is worth about 2.75 a foot…i might start stealing it too
Not surprised, the price of copper has gone through the fucking roof over the last 6 months or so. My fiance’s step father runs American Brass and he’s been saying it’s stressing the company quite a bit.
We had a rep. for PEX piping come in yesterday and try to convince us to use their flexible tubing for gas and water instead of copper cause its soo expensive…i think he said copper went up like 600% since january…INSANE
Copper prices are rediculous. the wire in our warehouse has just rocketed in value. We will be making such a high gross margin on it because we bought it over a year ago when it was cheap. It is wierd to see the inverse relationship between standard metals and precious metals. Gold dropped over $50 last week, and copper went up by the same percentage!!!
Gold is still expensive as shit for the long run. So is silver right now
Everything is up.
At the scrap yard Aluminum is over $0.60 per lb.
We stripped an aluminum sided house last week, got $900 cash at the yard.
Copper is over a dollar a pound.
Wow, 1500 lbs of aluminum siding, must have been a big house.
It was actually small. House on Parkhurst in Tonawanda. I didn’t think it was nearly close to that much. I loaded it into one decent sized trailor.
fuck i gotta start stealing gutters
Laurie Brock, of Max Brock Recyclers in Buffalo, says copper crimes are becoming more common because scrap yards are now paying around $3.00 per pound. That’s some of the highest rates ever.
Damn…
THREE DOLLARS???
wtf? I think it was only 1.35 or something last week. Thats a huge difference.
So if it’s going for $3 a foot like the article said, they got around $1500. Sounds pretty elaborate for that amount. Not to mention there was more than one thief that they would have to divide that between. But hey, money’s money.
Side note, dont you think they could track that down if they did scrap it? How many local places just paid $1500 for 300 feet of copper wire

And it’s $3 a pound, an average one foot section of powerline weighs near the 20-40 pound range.
not to mention NEW wire
hopefully they were smart enough to go out of state to trade it in
At minimum they probably walked off with near $10000 for a few hours work.
