I just bought a 2000 Cherokee, and the P.O. gave me the factory CD player with the truck. Previously he had an aftermarket HU and who knows what else installed. The 2 main plugs for the factory radio were still installed, but the small 2-pin plug is MIA.
My questions are A: what is that plug for, and why could it have been cut off? And B: I plugged in the other 2 plugs, and all I get is a ticking coming from a relay in he fuse box. The relay is good. Would this be just because of the missing plug, or a whole other issue? I’m hoping I can just track down the wiring for it and splice one on from the junkyard. For the record, car audio and wiring is far from my specialty.
edit: if you look at that picture that shows the ground its one wire and it is going on at an angle at one of the metal pieces. prior to 99 that is how the grand cherokees were grounded. he has 2000 that pic was for 99 that is not for the ground and you car probably does not have steering wheel radio controls and thats why its not ion your car but the radio is able to use them.
looking more at it and into it the previous owner probably cut the ground wire connector off for use in the aftermarket. what you need to do is find the ground and try to either get a connector on it that will slide over where the ground needs to go or find some other way to ground that wire to the factory radio.
TJSZ is correct, inorder to install an aftermarket radio you have to cut the ground connector off and wire it into the after market harness. My 98 doesn’t have steering wheel controls or the white plug on the back of the factory radio.
Thanks guys. That makes sense. There are 2 random wires (and a few cables) hanging out, so I’ll trace those wires to see if they are ground wires. I don’t have steering wheel radio controls on mine.
i have my stock radio out of my 97 wrangler, only a tape deck but i f you want to test it out you can have it. it was yanked out the first day i had it and has been sitting on my work bench since. i am in the village of north collins
Thanks a ton dude, I will let you know if I need it. I think this one should be OK, as I got it from the guy who owned the Jeep before the guy I got it from (It’s been flipped several times since it was last registered- long story), and he owned it for a while and had nothing to gain by lying about the CD player working. He probably just screwed something up when removing his HU.
