Jeep Cherokee Quadra-Trac system. Good/Bad?

Just checked out a 2001 Grand Cherokee that I really liked. But I haven’t done too much research on the quadra-trac system yet. Is it reliable? Any common problems? Doesn’t seem like there’s much of a difference in mpgs between this and the regular system in just RWD mode.

It only had 78k on it if that helps. Any info is helpful.

Paulo the AWD jeeps have HORRIBLE fuel mileage.

I think a 4.0 RWD will get you maybe 16/17mpg while the AWD 4.0 I’ve heard get ~14mpg. If this jeep has the V8 good luck lol, hope you don’t have a long commute.

x2!

Not a long commute. And it’s the I6.

What drive modes does the quadra-trac have? My 2002 Grand Cherokee has the Quadra-Drive system and has just 4HI and 4LO, with no option for 2WD. If it’s anything like that, it uses a viscous coupler to determine power between the front and rear axles. It’s a great transfer case but after time this will wear out and need replacement. Mine has 75k and still works like a charm though. Fluid was always replaced on schedule which I’m sure helps. I’ve heard that the replacement cost is around $300. I think I will swap in a NV242 Selec-Trac when my coupler wears out. Supposedly it’s pretty easy.

The prior version used the viscous fluid coupler; the ones in the 99-04’s used pressure from the transmission pump instead, they don’t wear out and break like the older VC ones.

The Quadra-Drive is the best one of them. I’ve got an '04 GC Limited with the Quadra-Trac II system. The difference is that the Quadra-Drive has the sensing differentials similar to what the Transfer-case does; the Quadra-Trac doesn’t have the diffs. The only weakness that I see/have read about is the lack of lockers/limited slip in the front and rear axles. It was an option in the rear-axle, but the front is an open-diff if you don’t have the Q-D system.

I’ve got the 4.7L V8, and get 15mpg normal driving, 20 on the highway.

I’ve had zero issues with the 4wd system.

I suggest doing some reading at http://www.jeepforum.com/ they have TONS of info over there on these jeeps.

Don’t worry, it’s a Jeep thing.

Might as well buy a Blazer if you’re gonna get that mpg, I say Toyota Tacoma so you can move stuff and tow bikes

Good info guys, thanks.

Chris, it has a tow package, no worries.

Dear Paulo,
jeeps get horrible gas millage.

I babied mine and it was still shit. I6- 12city summer…winter… dont ask.

Let me just say I sold it and bought a v8 that gets 18 city. Didnt expect 18 but ill take it

Love Ant.

+1

Wait until you lift it and get bigger tires, they don’t call them rolling bricks for nothing.

Hi retards, I see nothing about gas mileage.

I think the 249 is the quadra trak. Anything in the WJ I hear is pretty good.

Keep in mind that I have an all highway commute to work, and it’s not very far. I wasn’t incredibly concerned with gas mileage, just curious if the quadra trac was much different than just 2WD. But it seems like it’s only 1-2 mpg different. No biggie there.

I was mostly concerned with the reliability of the system over the traditional part time 4x4.
