JEEP HELP

i have a 99 grand cherokee limited 4.7L

i replaced the rad. and can not get the system to bleed out and start flowing. the owners manual states that there is special procedure for the v8’s. can anyone help me out with the procedure so i dont have to by a service manual.

thanks

I am not sure on the 4.7 but on the cherokees if you pump the upper radiator hose while it is running it will get most of the air out and it will start to flow. at least that is what I did on mine.

might want to check www.jeepforum.com also

ya the 4.7 is different the book says the 4.0 is a normal bleeding and the 4.7 to refer to the service manual for a special bleeding process

It’s a jeep thing,

sorry Bob.

  1. Open cooling system bleeder valve (where the upper hose meets the engine block) and fill the radiator at the radiator neck until coolant comes out of the bleeder valve.
    a. Tighten the bleeder valve when coolant starts to flow out of it
  2. Install radiator cap onto radiator filler neck
  3. Run Jeep at idle with high heat (maximum temperature setting) on recirculate for 10 to 15 minutes to check for any leaks in transmission lines or coolant

thanks for the link. i filled the rad to the top with the plug out and water never made it to the breather, so i filled the engine through the breather port and ran up to 210 then shut it down. the bottom hose is still ice cold so im thinking the thermostat is stuck shut, since im getting no flow to the rad

put the thermostat in a pan of water and boil it to see if it opens. if it doesn’t open then you know it is the thermostat. if it does then you need to find a different way to “burp” the system

im going to change it and re burp the system, the trucks been sitting since dec. with no top rad hose on it. (i baught it this way, the truck was wrecked)
