Does the head have to be removed to replace the timing chain? I know the FSM says you must but im wondering if its just an optional step.
In order to replace the pistons and rings with aftermarket parts must the cylinders be honed or machined?

I"m pretty sure on the SR you need to take the head off to do the chain, cause there is a peice in the middle that prevents you from pulling the chain all the way out… Unless I’m on crack and thought I saw something else. I know the timing cover needs to be pulled, and to do that, you need to drop both oil pans. Sucks. But the KA may be very different.
And I beleive you need to have the cylinders honed. Kinda like replacing brake pads, you need to get the rotors machined. I think.
I’m not sure about the timing chain. But When you Replace rings or pistons you should hone or machine the cylinder wall.
240sx.org shoiuld have the timing chain answer, but I would think Aaron i sright that the head would have to be pulled. It certainly would make the job easier to put back together. If you still have good cross hatching on the cylinder walls, I don’t believe it is necessary to hone them. Especially when you consider some people change teh pistons from the bottom, when they don’t need to pull the head just change rings. Another test is if you have no oil control issues, the cross hatch should be good, so no reason to pull the head to hone.
Hmmm here is one of son240sx.org
it looks like you do not need to remove the head to get a the upper guides anyways. That is where the rattle comes from.
