Hey guys I have a guy at work that is driving a 90 hatch and he mentioned that his engine knocks when he uses regular fuel but not when premium is used any ideas?

early 89 motor, retard the timing and good to go.
Yeah his timing must be messed up.
Just loosen the bolts on the distributor and turn it back a few degrees.
use a timing light when you do this. IIRC correctly the SOHC is ± 15 deg. Its written on the underneath of the hood. just retard it a touch of this to like half way between 10 and 15 deg. marks. I might be as simple as to far advanced.
On a SOHC motor its safe to run as high as 17deg on 87 anything more than that you need 89+
