It is undisputable that the ocean is undergoing changes. These happended before civilization and will continue after it is gone.
Each spring in the stratosphere over Antarctica (Spring in the southern hemisphere is from September through November.), atmospheric ozone is rapidly destroyed by chemical processes.
As winter arrives, a vortex of winds develops around the pole and isolates the polar stratosphere. When temperatures drop below -78°C (-109°F), thin clouds form of ice, nitric acid, and sulphuric acid mixtures. Chemical reactions on the surfaces of ice crystals in the clouds release active forms of CFCs. Ozone depletion begins, and the ozone “hole” appears.
Over the course of two to three months, approximately 50% of the total column amount of ozone in the atmosphere disappears. At some levels, the losses approach 90%. This has come to be called the Antarctic ozone hole.
In spring, temperatures begin to rise, the ice evaporates, and the ozone layer starts to recover.
Since this has been recognized and CFC production has gone down the “hole” has recovered, and deviated substiantually from the projected doomsday path we subposedly where on.
I don’t believe that because we have a verified symptom (avg. temps rising) that we are certian what constitutes the cause. I’m not disputing that CFC’s link with ozone and pull it out of the stratusphere. I’m desputing the idea that we are on a potential doomsday path. For the producers of the show to substantiate theory as fact is irrisponsible. What more would you expect from a show all about trying to scare you into thinking the world is gonna end though.
this just in, the world is older than 1000 years… please google some timelines for the ice ages… their points were that temps rose and rose higher than the previous times and then drastically dropped into ice ages like 200,000 and 450,000 years ago
I wasn’t really talking about the show this thread is about, so my bad, i didn’t realize that you were more specifically talking about the show and it’s motives rather than ‘global warming’.
I agree that atmospheric gas levels fluctuate in a normal up and down routine… and it is normal for these things to happen, what they are seeing is the increase in carbon dioxide that is not allowing for the sun’s heat to be released into the atmosphere and is causing higher yeilding temps on the earths surface, greenhouse style.
I think that the introduction of fresh water into the ocean is normal, but a drastic dumping of fresh water could be an issue… more specifically with the northern to southern atlantic ocean drifts and the cold/salt -> warm/fresh constant cycling
