Let's talk insurance v. Geico

I’ve had Geico since I was 20. Never had a problem. Was paying $2k/yr or something with state farm(under parents policy)for 1 car when i was 19, switched to geico and it was $1200/yr. When I turned 21 it cut in half.

Now, 5 yrs later with 3 20+ speeding tickets on 2 “newer” cars with full coverage on 1, I still pay $600/yr. I’ve NEVER had an increase from tickets.

Been with them for always untouchable rates. Made a claim for the first time this year on a hit and run and it could not have gone any better. They came out to my house to appraise, and actually came up $500 higher than the highest estimate I got and cut me a check on the spot for that amount. Ended up with it fixed from my friend’s shop and $1300 in my pocket

I’ll be paying just under 2k a year for 1/2 mil - 1/4 mil coverages and full everything for 3 vehicles… through USAA.

I know plenty on people that work for Geico and none have anything really bad to say.

holy shit beck thats more than what i pay for 3 cars lol

ive had geico since i was 19, had a few accidents with them, one when i had full coverage. they were super fast about adjusting damage and getting me a check. honestly, i couldnt be happier with them

lol sounds vaguely familiar

this.

My insurance policy dropped about $1800.00/yr when i switched to geico. went from like 250bucs month to 100bucks month. nationwide was ripping me off.

Due to my lack of faith in Geico and hearing a few retarded stories about them, I’m out. I contacted my agent and she shopped around. About a dozen providers offered me coverage…I had awesome rates (based on credit and accident history) but when they all ran an MVR for ticket history, the story changed. This was a ticket over a month ago and added 4 pts to my license. Allstate offered me coverage for $6,500 a year :uhh:. A couple carriers actually pulled their offers altogther. However, Progressive came in @ $1300/year. So I’m saving ~$1,000!

Geico quoted me I think $1200, but they wouldn’t “firm” up my policy until I gave them a down payment…homie don’t play dat game. Overall, I’m pretty happy. Oh and I get to go through the agent who’s taken care of me for 8+ years and my father for 35+ years.

Too bad Progressive sucks. Have fun should you ever have to file a claim.

Very informative post Jay! The details are outstanding.

Like details matter. You have 27 posts of people talking about how good Geico is and you post “I heard Geico sucks so I went with Progressive”.

Meh. Having an actual agent, makes me feel a ton better. Especially when she deals with various agencies everyday and tells me how happy she’s been with progressive from the start. Talking to the 3-4 body shop owners I know personally, they all said that Progressive has always been good to them. Yeah, I hear horror stories about Geico, Progressive, etc etc. If you look at anything on the internet there’s always going to be people complaining and putting up bad reviews on the internet. I mean, I just read somewhere that a 2010 M3 isn’t as good as a 2011 Mustang GT because of performance…

lol.

fwiw i also have had geico for 4 years and although i bad mouth the shit out of it when it comes to actually working there the coverage and rates have always been great.

I had an agent when I had progressive. First time I had a claim the agent said, “here’s progressives 800 number, you have to deal with them on the claim”.

I agree that agents don’t mean shit. Although I do find it nice when I can just email my guy for quick changes without waiting on-hold. Same with my Allstate claim for hitting a deer. It was after-hours so I called the 800 number. I don’t think my agent EVER called me to ask how the claim was going.

At least you’re saving money now though. If you ever get screwed on a claim, just think of it this way, “At least I have been saving $1k a year, so I can afford to pay a little out of my pocket on this claim.” If you go 2 years without an accident, you save $2k. Then lets say the next year, you get in accident. Maybe they’re not gonna cover AS MUCH of the damages as the other guys would have, but at least you have that $2k to play with. So lets say you have to toss in another $1k on top of the claim to get your car fixed the way you want (maybe they refused to re-spray your fender and claim the scratches weren’t from the accident). You still end up on top with the $1k in savings.

If you only have 1 accident every 5 years, imagine how much more the savings would be. In my opinion, it’s worth the risk for the good savings. Always remember that insurance companies are making profit somehow. That’s because, in general, most people end up paying WAY MORE into their insurance over time, than they ever end up using.

My agent has always gone out of her way and used her broker status to get shit done above and beyond what the insurance company was going to do. She’s got the juice behind her job title as Agency Owner to make shit happen. For instance, my family had 3 glass claims in a week. Insurance company demanded that we remove glass coverage to continue with their policy. We called her up, all 3 claims were handled w/ $0 deduct and we were allowed to continue on with coverage as it was. Maybe it’s because she’s a 50+ veteran of dealing with the Beck family. She rented my father his first apartemt

If you are getting that kind of service, you would be an idiot not to stick with it…

There is something to be said about good customer service.

I mean, I realize most agents just broker you the best insurance they can and collect their commission, issue id cards etc etc

However, she’s like my aunt. I can’t disregard her when she’s always looked out for my family and our best interests. I call her up and ask her to do something, it’s handled. Well worth $164 more/year.

this might be worse than fry’s ryan homes thread

Not really, because in this case Beck seems to have a hookup on the insurance that will get him around the BS progressive pulls on 99% of their customers.

Well, I have someone going to bat for me. However, if I get in an accident I’m going to total this bitch. I don’t give a fuck what the insurance company wants to give me…just total it. GAP Insurance FTW.

Oh and Progressive insurance won’t have creaks and nail pops in 5 years.
