A motorcyclist from Schoharie County died after crashing into a boat trailer being hauled by a Jeep near the Great Sacandaga Lake.
Robert J. Hurn, 45, of Richmondville, was driving east on North Shore Road at 12:44 p.m. Saturday when the westbound Jeep turned as it headed into the state boat launch entrance, blocking his travel lane. Hurn collided with the loaded trailer and was pronounced dead at the scene, Saratoga County sheriff’s deputies said.
Thats a horrible thing to happen but you cant blame the guy in the jeep with out knowing the whole story or being there. It was a shitty mistake that costed some one their life.
Of course I don’t know the details, but generally taking a left in front of the bike is a very common mistake that drivers make because they either fail to see the bike at all, or misjudge the distance to the bike and think they can make it in time.
He got a ticket for failing to yield, which implies that he cut the biker off in a normal situation.
Crappy either way, but all of us (bikers) dread that move, because we can’t see it coming, until it’s too late.
Yea thats the worse thing is that on a bike you are pretty much fucked in that situation. If you swerve you are going down and if you hit the brakes you are fucked. Hence why I still choose 4 wheels over two
What I wanna know was this biker wearing any gear? And if he wasn’t, would he have lived if he had. It seems to me like 90% of the bikers I see on the road, only wear basic clothing and a helmet/gloves. Even the older men on Harleys.
Ain’t no joke. Whether it’s other drivers, or the bike drivers themselves not paying attention/doing stupid things, bikes ain’t no joke.
My sister-in-laws brother, who is 23, t-boned a car last sunday in Virginia. He was in ICU for 5 days with collapsed lungs and a torn up right arm among other things.
He’s out of ICU and breathing on his own, but his right arm is permanently paralyzed.
I think I’ve decided to not get a bike (as I had made a thread earlier that I was considering it). Just too much risk, even if I do take classes, wear gear, etc.
yea owning a bike scares the hell out of me i feel like i got too much to live for to be fucking around with that… but then again its just like … whatever happens, happens… sadly this kind of shit happens way too much
My cousins wifes father died a couple weeks ago from a motorcycle accident. The guy that took a left in front of him was the president of the harley club that they were in and they were headed to the same place.
My neighbor’s lawn care guy (Flood is his last name, some of you may have known him) died on his Harley when someone cut him off last second. What’s worse is his family was in the car behind them and watched him die. Awful situation…
In an accident like that what is gear going to do for you? You’re Riding 40 MPH plus straight into a 4000 lb wall, some padding on your elbows won’t do much.
For all we know the bike could have been doing 80 mph in a 45. Or he could have just been cut off, we don’t know.
All I know is when this happens between two cars it’s a fender bender. When there is a bike involved somebody dies. Bikes just aren’t worth dying for IMHO.
That is a choice those people made and I am not going to go into the right and wrong debate. I feel bad even riding for the 5 mins to work with full gear but without my shin and knee guard, and I am shopping for a chest plate. Yes, ALL the gear you have on MIGHT not save you from a critical hit but knowing I didn’t do anything I possibly can when riding to protect myself is more chilling than anything. Without a shadow of a doubt, bikes are venerable among traffic. I think having the correct attitude when riding will protect you more than any gear will ever be able to provide.
Even with the little riding mileage under my belt, I can honestly say riding is the closest thing to flying without ever leaving the ground, something that even driving a open wheel race car on an open track can’t compare; and I am loving every second of it (except when I am stuck in traffic :tongue).
As in any case involving diving/riding a machine at speed, the safest way to do it is always on the track. Ride well.
