Looking for a medium range scope for a .223 / 5.56 AR.

Either 1-4x or 3-9x.

I don’t feel like spending over 200 bucks, as I’ve shot with expensive ones and cheap ones and really don’t see an improvement with my shooting. I don’t expect to shoot anything further than 150-200 yards, I’m pretty good (for a n00b) with iron sights at 55-100 yards.

Something that lights up would be nice, with some mildots now that I actually figured out when the bullets stop climbing and start dropping. Don’t really see a need for compensation stuff either at that range.

I don’t plan on foraging through the forest or going to a mini war zone and getting this thing all banged up, I do plan on killing some zombies or shooting some asshole who decides to try to break into my or my parents house, target shoot for this year, and some very, very light hunting next year.

Note : I do plan on getting a handle with iron sights, so this thing is going to sit pretty high.

Thank you for your input, if you do give any. I have a feeling NYFirearms guy will be chiming in, and probably Thorpe. lol

200 Yards max and home defense? Find a red dot you like. 200 limit kinds sucks. either spend less than $100 and get like a china truglow or get quality. I would say go with an EOtech 512 or an Aimpoint (personal preference. I have both) to be honest. You always have the option to add the magnifier after as well on both brands.

Scope+home defense really don’t belong in the same sentence. If you need a scope to shoot an intruder you’re going to jail when all is said and done, especially in NY. Get yourself a little laser sight if you plan on using it for home defense. That little red dot projected on center mass is a real good motivator to do as you’re being told. Plus a scope is horrible for low light, short range quick target acquisition, the exact things you’d encounter in a home defense situation. Sounds like you’re wanting one gun to do too much.

Iron sights = close range, and I have a laser already, sighted in at 25 feet. Sits nice and close to the barrel so it doesn’t deviate too much at 10 feet or at 50.

I need zoom…

Get a redfeild scope.

tons of what you are looking for in the sportsmansguide.

iron sight are good for well over 300 yards. If you got the cash, go with an aimpoint. If not get a cheap one off of ebay.

Aimpoint and EOtech are both really personal preference but I think a red dot is really the way to go. You can shoot accurately and easily out to 200 yards. If you want zoom. Both offer a magnifier option as well.
When are you in buffalo next? You can stop buy and play with both. The Aimpoint is great when you can forward mount it like on my Colt monolithic upper but on my regular flat top I’d choose an EOtech because of the very open sights.

PS … MBUIS (manual back up iron sights) are supposed to be zeroed at 50 meters not 25 feet

Zero on the M16 is set at 36 meters, not 50. When ever sighting it in, You must shoot at least 27 yards to get the most accurate zero. The 5.56 does not stablize untill 27 yards out.

This is from US Military ammo.

You zero in at the given distance. The bullet will travel up as it goes out. At 300 meters the height of the round should be almost the same height as it was when leaving the muzzle.

I was under the impression that the bullet would come back down to the height of the muzzle?

NEVERMIND : your talking iron sights.

We’re both wrong about the zero. It’s 25 meters/ 82.25 feet/ or just over 27 yards(making you right about the second part). This is from M855 62 grain steel core ammo. M193 55grain will zero differently.
I really need to read things before I post ALL the time. lol

Quote from FM 3-21

0-43. To ensure proper and accurate shot group marking‑‑

  1. Apply the four fundamentals of marksmanship deliberately and consistently. Establish a steady position allowing observation of the target. Aim the rifle at the target by aligning the sight system, and fire your rifle without disturbing this alignment by improper breathing or during trigger squeeze.

  1. Initially, you should fire two individual shot groups before you consider changing the sight. Fire each shot at the same aiming point (center mass of the target) from a supported firing position. You will fire a three‑round shot group at the 25‑meter zero target.

  1. You will triangulate each shot group and put the number "1" in the center of the first shot group and a number "2" on the second. Group the two shot groups and mark the center of the two shot groups with an X. If the two shot groups fall within a 4‑centimeter circle then determine what sight adjustments need to be made, then identify the closest horizontal and vertical lines to the X, and then read the 25‑meter zero target to determine the proper sight adjustments to make. A proper zero is achieved if five out of six rounds fall within the 4‑centimeter circle

that chart is a good refrence, But diffrent rounds will have a diffrent rate of drop over distance.

This also is for an M4, My information was for an M16.

Yeah, that’s M855 specific. Most people will stick to M855 or M193 because of price and availability.

Howie for what you’re talking about the main purposes of this weapon. I’d switch to or continue to use M193 55 grain ammo as it has MUCH better close range ballistics than the m855 does.

Yep. I was just rereading. I had the marine corp shooting charts up. They battle zero at 36 yards. I am just an infantry guy, Reading skills suck.

200 is not enough for anything worth buying when it comes to a magnified optic.

For the 1-4x nothing comes close to the burris tac30 for the price. It is 299.
