I recently purchased a 2005 sti. I took the winter rims off and put the oem gold bbs ones on. I put them on myself with a tire wrench. After 50 miles i went back and tighten all the lug nuts. About 4 weeks later i notice a lug nut is missing off the right front rim. The next day i made an appointment to get it fixed the day after that. The day i made the appointment i was pulling into wendys and heard a clunk so i got out and so that there was now 3 lug nuts missing. On a closer look i saw that not just the lugs were missing but the lug bolts were also snapped off flush with the rim. So next day i took it in and got them fixed. Its now been about 3 weeks and i noticed one lug nut was missing. This time just the nut not the bolt. I had extra nuts from the previous incodent so i decided while i had some time i would take the rim off and clean the brembos and inner wheel. well as im putting the nuts back on i put them oin finger tight at first. I then start the star pattern with the wrench and when i get to the third nut i put the wrench on it and barley twisted is as i was talking to someone and it fell to the ground. I thought it just slipped off the lug nut. As i tried to put it back on the nut i realize the lug nut and half of the bolt are in the wrench still. The bolt that broke was one of the originals that wasnt replaced.
Does anyone know why this is happening and what i can do so it nevcer happens again.
get a torque wrench and set it to 90ish lbs. or get stronger arms. I have never had this problem…
As you noticed, your old lugs are now weak due to being stressed by the wheel from being loose, I would just start over, making sure everything is fresh and new.
I would check your wheels too, the mounting points might be elongated…
Personally, I would replace all of the lugs on the car for good measure. It sounds like someone severly overtightened all of them at one point. However yes, you really do need a torque wrench to keep this from happening again.
Either over or under tightened. The only time I personally ever had an issue with lugs breaking of is when they were too loose and backed off. But you would have some vibration if that was the case. I think Dan is proly right.
