I know, I know… I’m a huge liberal Socialist… but I really think Mark DeSantis is a thousand times more qualified to be mayor than Luke Ravenstahl. I can’t vote in the race because I live in the suburbs, and I’m sure DeSantis is way behind in the polls, but I just wanted to bring the subject up. The mayor of Pittsburgh effects change that affects us in the suburbs, yet we have no say in who holds that office.
So, if you live within the city limits, and you’re not completely averse to the political process, please look into both candidates running for mayor and make the right choice.
I’ll admit, his website does go into some details on specific issues, as opposed to the usual generalized political statements like “we need to improve the city.” Uh, yeah, thanks for that insightful statement.
DeSantis is a self-righteous businessman. You know all this talk about the younger population leaving and how we need to breathe new life into the city? The last thing you want to do is replace a young successful mayor whom these people look up to with some douche bag from Washington. Luke’s got more ambition. As long as he looks to his council and peers for advise he should be ok. As proven already, he has no problem exercising the power of the mayors office to get the job done.
None of them can solve it directly…Pittsburgh technology employers should wake up and start paying people the way they should be paid for tech jobs. It’s a proven fact that the place ranks low on average salary versus the rest of the nation. There’s the real problem, people wouldn’t go other places that have better pay, better road systems, etc. if the salary was right for tech jobs, period! Don’t give me that COL is lower in Shitsburgh BS. Pay up, suckas!
have you checked out the cost of living here compared to other cities. 80 grand here is like 140K in other places. Ask TJ how the house prices and salaries are in Cali.
I am not saying I wouldn’t like more money, but everything is lower here, it all evens out. You may not want to hear that argument, but it’s the truth.
I had an offer for 20 grand more than what I make now in virginia and I would have been losing out bigtime if I took it.
But it is the truth. Where else can you buy a house 10 miles from downtown in a safe and quiet suburb. When I was looking for a job, I knew that I could have gone to DC or NY for a job that would pay like 60K out of school, but instead I stayed in Pittsburgh and got a job for less than that and bought a house, a car, and got married. If I was making more money in another city, I would have to spend way more for housing, parking, entertainment, etc. and I would not have had the funds to have the life that I have now.
neither guys impress me too much in the debate. dansitis looked pissed off at the world and luke looked like a smart ass president of student council… too bad we can;t find a good free agent mayor on waivers.
The news hates Luke, so if I could I would vote for him. It’s amusing to see reports that are so pointless about him from time to time… Pittsburgh and Allegheny County need to reduce taxes and fees from these area, since that will help make Pittsburgh a viable area to Business. Why are a lot of companies move to Washington and Armstrong just across the border?
Did you ever see that article from Colleen Paulson about “Paid less in Pittsburgh”? People in Cinci, Charlotte and Cleveland don’t have that much higher COL but the salaries are at a better median. Explain that?
We need a combination of lawmakers and mayors working in concert with the PHTC to make salaries what they should be for Tech jobs then maybe young people will stop fleeing SWPA.
i think that if this area would do a better job with the unproductive people that the people who do work, it would give them one less reason to bail out. they are tryin to put housingnear the downtown area for young professionals but fail to move the scum out of downtown, northside, etc…
That’s true for not only businesses but homeowners as well. Adding a a drink tax while reducing the parking tax (which private parking companies, have yet to pass the savings from the previous reduction, on to the customers) to make up for the transit system downfall/fiasco is no way to bring people into the city.
Even with places like the Heinz lofts, stript dist. apt’s, north shore community and the launch of those new lofts here in the city (Story in the postgazette today) I don’t think many people with average Pgh salary of 35k-40k can afford to live there ($1500-$3000/mo lowball)
lets see what other douchebaggery he can get into for the next 4 years…
only reason he won is cause he was bussing all the old folks from the retirement homes to the polling sites cause he knows all older Pittsburghers vote straight democrat, no matter what…
no luke won because he probably got 95% of the minority vote and all the fat citiparks workers were afraid they might have to do something if desantis won. there are plenty of people happy with pittsburgh and its slums.
