Maxwell's '74 cb450 cafe build.

I have one. and a shit-ton of rivets…Hang on, I might come back with some stunning MSpaint pics for you to illustrate my thoughts on how to approach the seat haha…

Ok, so I have a couple ideas…do what you will with them lol.

you could cut the stock pan where I’ve marked in red here, then make extension pieces to make the side line up with the bottom of the tank, then use some of that chrome door-edge trim available from any auto parts store…the green line is one option and the orange line is another option for extensions:

then to fit your plastic seat, you could cut where the red line is, and rivet(marked by green dots) to the top of the stock pan to retain the latch and hinges

Now, I can’t tell by the pics…but if you don’t have the rear rubber mount holding the tank on in these pics, all of what I said could be moot…the rubber mount will raise the rear of the tank almost a half inch, and may not require any extensions on the sides of the stock seat like I “illustrated” LOL

another option, is fab up a quick little frame and borrow the latch and hinges from the stock pan instead of modding the stock pan…then split the plastic seat down the middle longways (“illustrated” by the red line again)…and place the two halves so they overhang the frame rails until the side profile meets the same plane as the seat, then just patch the middle back up to fill the cap…

actually, that second idea might make the shape of the bump even CLOSER to the shape of the gas tank by making the middle a little wider and flatter…

just my ideas… I figure I have a 50/50 chance of you loving the ideas or calling me an asshole…

Wow, thats looks really good

Hey Nick… asssholeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. Ha, jk.

Here’s my thought. No pictures since I am at work so let me do my best with my limited knowledge of the english language to help you guys visualize.

I am going to cut the sides off the stock pan, cut the sides off the new cafe tail, rivet or bolt them together then… fab up a hing at the very front of the stock cut seatpan, so that the cafe tail will be able to be folded upwards to access electrical and the battery. If you look at the stock upper ‘hoop’ on the frame, the stock seatpan will rest on that and the lower crossbrace in front of it. (bottom of stock seatpan has rubber bushings that sit on these)

This should give me plenty of support, lower the tail down and make it flush with the tank, and still maintain some sort of easy access with the hinge up front by the tank, which I am hoping will be able to bolt into the same holes that hold the metal bracket for the tank.

Does this make sense? I’ve been pondering ideas in my head for a week or so now and this is kinda what I was thinking.

Utilizing the stock hinges and locking mechanisms is just not going to work out, and IMO look like crap. Oh well.

Thx dude, although I am just slapping store bought parts on a crappy Honda frame. Haha

But seriously, I appreciate it.

This thread makes me itch to start my Busa’s diet lol, gonna shave some lbs off her

The most poorly drawn chicken scratch of my day. The stock seat pan will be cut to fit under the new cafe tail, and utilize the rubber bushing that sit on the upper hoop and lower crossmember of the frame. Then I just rivet the tail on after trimming the shit out of it, and hinge the front to where the bracket for the back side of the tank is. Boom done. Simple, foldable, secure.

Frame cutting mod? Anyone else remember this gem? SHERVIN!

I’m not gonna go that far, just replacing a lot of stuff with lighter materials

Yeah, please don’t EVER go that far. That kid was just as bad as the’ yut ughh’ squid kid.

Ugh, I’m getting flashbacks of that damn seat! lol. Good luck though!

Dude it’ll be a piece of cake to cut down the sides, and either use the stock seat pan or some sheet metal to fab up a base with a hinge up front where the back of the tank sits. There is a bracket that holds the rubber bushing for the tank. The hinge will work super nice in there I think.

Word, more power to you haha. My seat shall be here Monday but I won’t be making progress as frequently as you are. You doing anything with wheels? I may just clean mine up and leave them like that.

both of ya’ll need to relax haha. I made brackets/frame for GV1390’s to fit as good as it could, and it wasn’t all that hard…should be about the same for it to work on maxwell’s too.

New rubber and cleaning. I may paint them black, which brings up a question. The rear brake is drum, so that may see a bit more heat. What should I go with if I decide to paint them?

vht high temp paint. it’ll do the job no problem.

Well, another weekend that got away from me… but I was able to sneak away today for just a few hours and sort out what I want to do on the tail section. It should look and function pretty well once everything is finished, and I can still use the document holder in the original seat pan.

shaved frame tabs

original seat pan cut down. My weight when sitting will be right inbetween the lower and upper frame hoop on the rubber pieces. I see no issues with this not holding up.

This is where i’ll have it hinge.

It sits pretty well inside of the cafe tail. All I need to do now is clean it up and take down the sides of this platic cafe tail a bit more. I’m thinking this will work juuuust fine.

Nothing new to report except that the tires are finally with Lee at Empire Cycle in OP. He was closed down for a bit due to family circumstances, but I got them to him today!

I also picked up some bits and pieces like wire wheels, brushes, mineral spirits, a hinge for the tail section, nuts and bolts, etc. Running around blows. More progress to come this week if it’s not too cold.

Three terrible photos showcasing over 10hr worth of work Sat and Sunday. Most of this time went to wire wheeling the frame to remove surface rust from the factory welds, and I finished grinding and smoothing off all the old tabs from the tail section that I absolutely do not need. I also cut and ground down the chain guard tabs I will no longer need on the rear swingarm. No photos of that. Sunday after getting really sick of the frame, and having my back in knots from being bent over it, I got to work with the dremel on taking down the cafe tail plastic. Nick (focus) you should really appreciate the way the tail looks now. I am hoping to get it finished and mounted tonight after work.

The hinge will be underneath but gives you the idea. It’s going to work great to access the battery underneath the seat!

2 crappy photos of the tail. I ended taking about an inch tapered to an inch and a half towards the back. The dremel made excellent work of this and I am really really happy with how it looks now. I apologize again for the terrible photos. I am hoping to get out again tonight and finish it off. I will post updates when I do!

looking good dudebro  I worked on a few other bikes this weekend myself lol…

I saw you pull off the bag trick in Newmans build thread

So, should I just get this frame blasted? That would make my life much easier. What you think a blast-off job would run me?

I think he quoted me like $75-100 when I considered it for mine…

Just for blasting, and not PC too?

Ugh… the cost isn’t terrible but i’d rather put in the additional 5 hrs and do it myself.
