Someone should work agressively to get some actual benefits of being a member. The extra forum access is useless, nobody really uses the picture hosting much. There aren’t any discounts that I know of except sort of from JDM-Place but whenever I call about stuff they quote me the same price as it’s posted for here even though it says “includes 15% son discount” every time something is posted.
You know, something USEFUL would be nice ;] Other than supporting the forum with hosting and whatnot.
I’m not complaining or anything, I just think someone should get on top of it. There are hundreds of active members here - that means a lot to small business.
I’ve sent out e-mails to nearly a hundred other clubs and businesses
asking if they’d be interested in forming an affiliation with SON240SX and
the results have been bismal. There are also powercoating services from
Jeff, and a couple other sponsors I am corresponding with now.
Its not as easy as you think to get people to offer good discounts. Even
a place as big as JRP wouldn’t pay $100 a year for a banner ad, they don’t
want to do discounts, whats in it for them?
If you have any suggestions, or places you’d like to get discounts from
post them here, and I can try to get in touch with them.
I run iQuACo and get all my own parts at cost, I have alot on my plate
and finding discounts I won’t use hasn’t been at the top of my priority list.
I tried with all the e-mails I sent out to other 240sx related clubs and
retailers, but nothing came of it.
I can’t imagine you run this site solely on your own? Maybe you should try to recruit someone whos really outgoing/personable to try to score some deals.
And… when you say “what’s in it for them”. There is a lot in it for them… just because they offer a discount doesn’t mean they dont make money. Retail is about volume, especially in this business. More volume = lower cost.
If they offer a 10% discount to me, I might go there instead of somewhere else. That does a few things for them:
gets them a new customer who will probably come back again in the future
counts towards better volume discounts
they make some money, maybe less than usual, but they still make some - what harm is done?

I don’t run SON on my own, there are all the admins, mods and RLs to
thank as well. But when it comes to external relations I’ve been doing
most of it myself.
I do group buys, and I give everyone from this site good pricing thru
iQuACo. The reason I haven’t offered a discount is because I already
give people good pricing, and the margin on various products is different
for me. I can’t simply say 10 or 15% off every product…
