My Fiance’s 02 Eclipse had somekind of a factory blemish with the paint. It looked like major sun fading to the primer. I researched it and found out that it is VERY common on 95-06 black Eclipse’s…so much so there are a few web sites dedicated to it. I learned the first step is to take it to a dealer and have either a manager of a regional manager look at it. So she went to South Park Mitsubishi and the manager looked at it and offer to repaint the entire top of the car and the rear quarters. Which is awesome considering her car is out of warranty. When i get home from work i will try and post pics of what it looks like. So if you have a black Mitsubishi with terrible factory blemished paint I would have it looked at and see what can be done.
It’s called delamination. Quite common on the dark colored imports, and alot of domestics…Although it looks like fade it is a pain in the ass to fix right. Must remove all clear, base, and usually the primer, to fix correctly. If they are gonna fix it for free, your a lucky bastard.
Ya they said free… they gave my fiance the # for a place in bentlyville…do you think I need to say something about the primer?
A good shop should know as soon as they see it. I can’t say what their procedure is to fix. I know when I encounter delamination, I strip to bare metal and then refinish. However I don’t do this for a living so I cant say how far they will go…Post some pics so you will know for sure if it is delamination. My guess is that it is.
Ok I will post pics when I get home…It would suck if they just scuffed and painted it and the problem came back in a few years.
If it’s a free repair and it lasts 2 years that’s still pretty good.
Sounds like they agreed to repaint it without much of a fight. Check into it a little further to see if there isn’t a recall. If there is a recall, it might give you more leverage on how far you can push the repair. If there isn’t a recall, beat90tsi is right, be happy with what you get.
is titanium grey covered as well???
my 2002 isnt bad but could be better
I went thru the same thing with my Avenger. It was really common with black avengers 97 and up
here are the pics of my fiance’s car…the spots in the rear started a year ago and the roof started this year. I found a very small spot on the hood while waxing it sunday.
I dunno…look at the pics I posted and if it looks like that then it could be…call and see
Yes that is delamination, check the tops of the fenders, top of the bumpers, and the mirrors if they are not fading yet, they will be soon… I know that don’t look too bad, but believe me, there is a lot of work to fix what is already faded. Keep us updated on this. I’m wondering how they will go about fixing it. If you push the dealer, you might get an overall paint job out of it.
my 89 formula did that,GM repainted it for n/c
the is a bog thing about this on fbody sites about 4th gen sail panels
the sail panel thing is for bubles in the fiberglass on the roofs
make sure they strip that down and not just respray that, good deal on for free though
I guess all i can do is ask…and see if they warranty their work. She wants the front bumper repainted as well. I am going to get a quote from them to add in the bumper. Can some of you guys give me a price as well on paint the front bumper only?
A while ago my mom had a Crystler Lebaron that was a dark blue color and it did that all over the top of the hood, trunk, roof ect…got so bad that the clearcoat and paint were actually gone completely and you could scratch and only get to metal. Same thing? The dealership told my mom something like this…"Have you been bringing the car to car-washes? “Sometimes” “Well if you didn’t bring it to our carwash or use our soap it ruins the paint”…what company has specific soap for a specific car or it ruins the paint???..stupid.
i’d say anywhere between 4-800 would be fair to have a whole front bumper repainted properly
Called the body shop and set us an appt for the 2nd week of jan to get it the hood, roof, trunk, and top 1/2 of the rear 1/4 panels. My Fiance’ asked about the spoiler and they said no, then about the mirrors and they said no. She asked if they would strip it down to metal and he said prob not but would have to see the problem. She asked if they warranty their work incase the problem comes back and his response was “So you are asking me if we warranty warranty work?..Well we stand behind or work.” She called the dealer back and to let them know she made an appt and she mentioned if the paint should be stripped to metal and the manager said it is only a problem with the clear coat and would not need to be taken down to the metal…she said it seemed like he was BSing b/c she asked that when she went down and said he was not sure. The place the dealer uses is “Powell’s Auto Body”…does anyone know anything about them? I guess all we can do is let them do whatever and hope it holds up considering the car was out of warranty.
