god damn this fucking huge t-up
Does anyone on the board have a camry swapped version one of these? I was also looking into picking up a mr2, but I wanted to check out that swap first.
Yeah, my best friend…
I am a little late to this thread…to answer your question:
I would highly suggest an MR2 for a project. Like Joe, I am jaded with blinders when talking about an MR2 as a project. Through my extensive research there are a few things you SHOULD do, IMO, to make an MR2 bulletproof for the track.
You can track a stock MR2, with no mods, and accomplish what you want: A car you can drive to the event, beat on it, and drive home. Seriously. These are pretty robust out-of-the-box. But you won’t beat “the guy” to beat.
Depending on the drive train you choose 5S, 3S, 1MZ, etc… to build you power plant hands down you should address suspension and brakes to handle any power add-ons but the list is small (Plus, I think this is true with any track car):
- Rotors
- Pads
- Coilovers or good Strut/Spring Combo
- SS Brake/Clutch Lines
- Poly-Urethane Bushings: Strut Bar, Control Arms, Sway…
- Sway Bar End-links
- Tires
I may be missing a few things off the top of my head but it is VERY doable.
If you need any more info Joe really is the guy to talk to. Check out www.mr2oc.com for tons of great info.

Keep us posted if you decide to get one. I am glad I bought mine.
do yourself a favor and get a turbo model to start with… not an n/a swapped unless you do it yourself and are anal.
they are no doubt a cheap platform, but realize they are getting rather old and most are pretty beat up by now. I liked mine, but it certainly was never what i’d consider reliable.
I have a turbo at my parents house in Fredonia that I would like to sell. If you are interested PM me. I know winter is not the time to be looking at these cars as far as test drives go but maybe we can set up something for spring. Let me know.
